Here begins the account of Ravensbeak, Raven Tribe, writing approximately 30 years after Turner: No one knows how old the Island of Lugaru is. Many different people and powers have ruled it through the centuries, leaving behind their own ruins and legends. What is certain is that at one time there existed a group of wolves known as the Death Tribe. They were the most fearsome of all those to ever rule the Island, even now. Some suspect they even controlled the Mainland and the Eastern Isles. Their weapons are old, ancient, and terrible! The exact nature has been lost in time, but many have suggested it was poisoned blades, magical weapons, fire that could burn anywhere, even on water, or perhaps it was a command of nature itself. Somehow, the Death Tribe was defeated, and the order of the four temples rose in their place - Earth, Air, Fire and Water, their goal to serve and protect the Island. Under them, Lugaru was united, and the Empire rose. In the beginning, the Empire ushered in Lugaru's Golden age. The capital, in the south, was the magnificent Sky Palace. Nearby were, and still are, the original temple ruins. All was well in the land, even the wolves and raiders caused little trouble. The Temples became the Empire's army, working to keep the peace under an emperor chosen by the four temple masters. The fighters became known as Seneschals, and the normal folk as Mendicants. But then rose a new emperor, who reigned with terror. He enlisted the help of elite, non-temple Seneschals who kept order with an iron paw. they became known as the Imperial Assassins, fighters so powerful a wolf would step aside. But the power was broken when a retired Assassin called Vincent challenged and killed the Emperor's chief general. it destabilized the northern part of the island, and rebels more or less took control. The empire, in an attempt to reconcile its people, began a campaign to rid the island of wolves, which Imperials, rebels and raiders all took part in. During these few years Lugaru was united by war, the Empire's atrocities forgotten. But this emperor died on the cusp of victory, killed by the captured Alpa Wolf. His son took the throne, and without wolves to threaten him, crushed the new-found united spirit. Any challenge was dealt with swiftly, silently. The temples, filled with corruption, did nothing. Imperial Assassins ruled. But the rebellion managed to hold the north. It grew equally with the emperor's tyranny. Lead by Tacticius, an old water temple master and a fighter called Lucius, the rebellion caused so much trouble the emperor was forced to ally with the wolves, bringing them back to the island. But an imperial assassin named Ash revolted against his emperor after the betrayal and killing of his fellow assassin, succeeding in killing the emperor and, along with the rebel's assistance, ending the empire. So ended the Golden age of Lugaru. a generation later, the Temples had become a place of learning and training again, still holding on to the traditions of the Golden age. The rest of the island had fallen into chaos. King Hickory ruled the east, the wolves the north, temples the south, and raiders the desert and anywhere else they could. Turner trained at the temple, and was hired by the king to drive raiders away from his kingdom, but retired soon after and married. After the slaughter of his family, he destroyed Hickory's kingdom and killed the alpha wolf, throwing the island into chaos. Turner's niece, Rose, discovered a more sinister plot. the king had been searching with the wolves for the lost weapons of the Death Tribe, hidden for centuries by a group of foxes known as the Raven Tribe, an ancient group, older than even the temples. Rose, with the help of a young fox called ____, a blacksmith called ___, and Turner himself, defeated the King's minions and allies. They became the new Raven tribe, silently protecting the island. The wolves, meanwhile, were divided. They were split into factions, each headed by their own Alpha Wolf. But with the chaos caused by Turner's dramatic actions, Lugaru was invaded by the Eastern Isles. the temples halted their progress, but the invaders united with one of the wolf factions and pushed on. The Air Temple was poisoned, but its young master escaped. It was planned that the four temples would begin a guerilla campaign against the invader, but the water temple betrayed the other three. The temples ancient power broken. Still, the Air, fire, and Earth orders continued to fight, driving the invaders off the island and restoring the fragile balance of power that passes for peace to Lugaru. Lugaru Places, names and People During the Golden Age, or the Empire Rule, there were basically four main classes of people: Mendicants: The traders, city folk, artist, blacksmiths, etc. Normally non-Fighters Seneschals: The Soldiers, assassins and guards. Most were trained by the temple, but other groups existed who performed... dirtier jobs Raiders: Mostly living in the wilds of the desert, these people have always plagued the Island, even in its golden age. the broad definition of a "Raider" was "Enemy of the Empire" A fourth class was the Nobles and rulers, made up of Temple Masters, Chieftains, and even the Emperor himself.
