Re: suggestions wanted: teaching game design to middle schoolers

Yeah, the assets in Unity is going to be a pain. That's the advangage of 2D programs such as Scratch, Game Maker or Flash: they can just open paint and doodle themselves. There are a couple of assets included with Unity, and you can find 3D models for free on the web, but it's not going to be a piec...

Re: suggestions wanted: teaching game design to middle schoolers

Well... pm me the username and a temporary pass you want, and i might be able to get you an account soon :D Are you part of the development team? DO NOT expect the students to create anything very good. Ultimately, the goal is not for the students to make the latest awesomest game, but to learn som...

Re: suggestions wanted: teaching game design to middle schoolers

A third grade girl saw me printing out the Scratch cards, and told me that she works on it at home with her Dad and loves the program. That's an awesome start! :P One thought I have had was that I could do one semester of Scratch, open it up to Fourth grade students as well, and then make it a pre-...

Re: Short Lugaru video

Perhaps one of the most useful things that a new player can learn is to pick up/retrieve a weapon while rolling.
Definitely- learning that makes knives much more useful :P

Re: Troubles running some Bundle games...

What graphics card do you have?
World of Goo is known to be VERY friendly with really crappy hardware, and to run smoothly on computers that can barely play any other games.

Aquaria and Gish, not so much. So it is very possible that your computer is just not powerful enough for any of these games.

Re: suggestions wanted: teaching game design to middle schoolers

Sandurz, I have no doubt that you did well with Java in 6th grade. I started programming at a rather early age too, and it is also the case for many of my friends and colleagues. However, it is definitely not representative of the capabilities of kids that age. Again, we are talking about children t...

Re: Put Alpha Notes in Wiki?

I think it's useless to create pages for the older versions- no one will bother filling them. Let's start at a78 :)

Re: suggestions wanted: teaching game design to middle schoolers

I think that a lot of cool stuff can be done with Scratch. For sure, it won't be 3D, but the kids can upload their own creations on the Scratch server, for others to see and comment (a bit like youtube). I think that's definitely cool. A factor to keep in mind is that sure, you want to teach the kid...

Re: suggestions wanted: teaching game design to middle schoolers

Hello resin, I'm a PhD computer science student and video game developer during my free time. I've worked with several middle schools and high schools, teaching computing, programming multimedia applications, etc to students. I'm also assistant director for a pretty big french company that offers ca...

Re: Open source

Jeff talked about it on IRC earlier, and I'm pretty sure the offer still stands.

However, 16 hours to raise $170k more...seems like a tough one to me :D

You can do that by just renaming files around I suppose.

Re: Unofficial alpha 77, weekly build

As said on IRC, there's a fix to that bug:

Open the file:

Data/UI/ribbon/ribbon.html

Go to line 318- if you are affected by the bug, you should see:

showPanel('rigging');

Replace by:

showPanel('regular');

Save, close, and launch Overgrowth. Voilà!

Re: Unofficial alpha 77, weekly build

#2 The alpha starts out in the Rigging mode ribbon but doesn't work. Now what I usually do is click on the Robbert that's autospawned and CTRL+R then press escape. This brings me back into the main menu ribbon (with the Rabbot commands and stuff). Man, thank you so much for that! I was confused as ...
