Played an Assassin type of character in oblivion. I ended up installing 3 different back-stab boosting mods, since i realised that a dagger can't do much in a one on one situation - even if you start with a 50% health advantage. The combat system was good in oblivion but the game was plagued by balance issues.
You never do enough damage to kill anyone in one hit. Almost everyone takes more than 5 hits to go down. This can be especially annoying when they have a healing spell or potion with them.
