.xml mods can be dropped anywhere and you just have to use the "load level" option from the menu to load them, though for convenience, it's best to drop them into "Data/Levels..." Ah, yeah, the MODS folder is for newer mods, it also won't load without extra files in the folder that won't come with older mods. Just drop them into the Custom folder path I listed above and it should hopefully work. It might also be that there's corrupted files in the level itself, if the 'custom...

Where abouts are you dropping the files in the directory?
A lot of the older maps go into Data/Custom/{author_name}/...

There was originally a purple smiley face, but they were replaced by this lad...

There's one on nearly every level, try and find them all... (not all are in the level play space, some require the editor or some mad parkour skill)

Make sure you're not changing that level script, I'd say. If it was the mod.xml that was causing issues, the game wouldn't even launch and removing the checkpoints doesn't usually affect anything but progression.

I remember I used to get this a lot on my old hardware, I'm not saying your hardware is bad btw xD If it's the same problem it seems like it's an issue with OpenGL Rendering, sometimes reloading the level a few times can fix it, but you can always manually tweak the lighting and post process effects...

I agree that levels can be difficult without checkpoints, but by the time the official Overgrowth campaign is released with the game, checkpoints will have been fully implemented. Seems like a bug. Nothing should disappear after a save.
Are you sure you're loading the same map, it's possible you've saved it as a new map and opened the level from the recent files (which wouldn't be the 'saved as' file)

This feature is in the game and I believe it has been since a207, you'll just have to hold alt and attach one spawn point to another, once that npc sees the character it should be following it will begin trailing close behind them.
