Little big planet is something you should get for a starter. It definitely is one of the greater PS3 titles.
Gran Turismo 5 will be something to look out for if you like racing games and i heard assassins creed 2 is far better than the first one.

... Haven't played any nor will I.
But I agree with the other great shooters available thing. Minus MGS4. Thing is no shooter. It's a movie where you have to play till the next event.

There's a ton of cutscenes, but there's still easily more gameplay, especially if you go the stealthy route.
MGS has never been about gunplay anyways
