Saw Wesnoth on the Ubuntu software center, never picked it up.
Planetside 2
It may be pretty Pay-to-win, but it's still cool as hell.

Realm of the Mad God is pretty cool too, though it used to be regular ol' free-to-play and has become pay-to-win in past updates, but that doesn't really matter 'cos it's not competitive.

Ooh, that is a pretty cool game. I haven't played that in months.

Actually I do have to note the technicality that 'free-to-play' games are not truly freeware... but since the OP was simply intending to find free entertainment, that doesn't really matter, though I still felt the need to point it out.

True. In terms of freeware that I've gained the most entertainment from (bonus: freeware runable on Mac):
Black Shades
Assaultcube
Marbleblast Gold
OpenTTD
Toribash
Warsow
Battle of Wesnoth

EDIT: Also, I recently discovered that there are still Ace of Spades Beta servers up here, and I'm sure you can find the old client somewhere as well. Fantastic game before it was bought by Jagex. You can run it on Mac through Wine, though I forget how. Can confirm it works though.

If we're including the best free-ware games that may end up stealing more time than most hobbies, League of Legends is good too.

http://boyslife.org/games/online-games/ ... -of-peril/ is a decent game. Fairly short as you can beat it in about half hour, but still fun.

World of Padman is good, if only really multiplayer

Quest for Glory 2, the freeware remake is quite good

There's also a kings quest game remake, but I don't recall ever trying that one.

Oh that's awesome. I found a site hosting beta servers, but I didn't know there was still a place hosting downloads and stuff.

I don't know of any games like Perspective. DigiPen students churn out some of the most innovative products we see. Portal was created by two of their graduates, before being picked up by Valve. Makes me proud to be from Washington State
However, I doubt you'll find anything quite like that game. Not exactly a style that has been done over and over in different settings and styles.
