Go to the tigsource.com forums, quite the amount of new game developers striving for popularity.
Lots of free and simple games.

Blacklight: Retribution is a great F2P shooter. It really doesn't feel Pay-2-Win either. The starting weapons are decent and its quite fun. You have no mini-map, but every player has about 2-3 seconds of basically X-ray vision. You can also summon mech-suits, flamethrowers, rocket launchers and the like from item stations with points you earn from killing people during a match.

Aye, Blacklight's quite fun when you get into it. If you don't, though, it's quite bland.
Then again, it's easy to get into, especially when you start getting headshots; that 'pop' is quite satisfying.

I enjoyed Blacklight a lot. But my computer is poop, the game would have slower and slower FPS each match played until it crashed.

They fixed the memory leak. At least it seems like they have. I've played it for hours with no issues.

Oooh, that's cool. I'll be checking it out sometime soon. Hopefully around the time I upgrade my computer.

The first that come to my head are dwarf fortress, ADOM, and cataclysm.
although if you are looking for a shooter you can play: tribes:ascend the already mentioned blacklight:retribution, TF2. If you have friends to play with there are plenty of free MMOs out there, like DDO for example.

Dwarf Fortress probably wins. It has everything really. And great modding capability through .txt files alone.

Pangya - Fantasy Anime Jigglies Golf

I have no love of sports games. I find them dull and a chore to play. But for some reason, a round or two of Pangya after work or when I just want to zone out and relax is awesome. Sure, its golf, but the courses are interesting enough and the gameplay isn't sim-based. There's courses on the standard green (pictured), and then you get courses set in volcanoes and ice fields.

One of the dumbest expressions ever. She's also cheating by kicking the ball into the hole.

Getting screenshots of actual gameplay is a bit hard because you have to time the clicks of the mouse or spacebar to start the swing, then set power, and then accuracy.

...So here, have a shrug.

On the note of Blacklight, its one of the more balanced F2P games I've played. If you want pre-made guns you have to pay real money. Or you can buy all the parts seperately using in-game currency. Its not too hard to earn but it'll take longer than just paying real money. Using about 5000 in-game credits I upgraded the stock and magazine type of the default assault rifle and changed the muzzle.

Cube 2: Sauerbraten is one nifty engine with a lot of focusing on real time map creation. It plays like Quake, has some mods here and there, and some people still play it! (Considering it was released around 2004-2006 it's real impressive)

I'm a little surprised no one's mentioned Wesnoth yet.
