Try something transitional. Experiment with some dark brown. Throw in some beige when you're comfortable. Whites should be a really easy step once you've gotten over the contrast thing.
Then gradually through green or orange you can expand onto the brighter colours and before you know it you'll be at a job interview dressed like a clown, complete with multicolour blinking LED nose.
