Hard is almost a challenge, Jeff. Enjoy while it lasts. v_V
(The following tips are from my memory of playing it about 6-7 times and then getting bored, and that was at the time of my first post in this thread, so I may have forgotten some stuff since then.)
Zan, upgrading's pretty much a necessity, but choose wisely. The more you upgrade, the more money you lose for a tower when you sell it. Squirt towers upgrade better than any other tower, I think, in terms of what you pay for what you get, and they're pretty cheap to upgrade. Plus, their range just gets better and better. Bash towers are useless unless you're going to upgrade them, and using three or four highly-levelled bash towers to keep enemies stunned is a great tactic if you've got a dart tower or Typoon Tower nearby to pummel the frozen foes. Pellet towers, however, aren't worth the price to upgrade. You're better off either spending the money upgrading other things or just buying more pellet towers. Two or three level 3 anti-air towers should be sufficient, if well-placed, to singlehandedly take out an entire incoming army of fliers, so don't waste your money upgrading the expensive things any further than that. Dart towers....damn those things hurt if you level 'em! But as they're expensive, you're probably better off with the cheaper and almost-as-good Typhoon Tower.
Your best friends if you're going for the maze strategy (don't see what else you'd want to do, really) are a Quake Tower in front of each entrance, as soon as possible (which is really late on Hard mode, but save up well and it should be manageable) along with a few bash towers and freeze towers, with a line of dart towers and Typhoon Towers behind. Other than that, pretty much the entire rest of the map can be just the pellet tower maze, aside from a few anti-air towers in the center of the map (or a single Swarm Tower) and you should be set to go.
