It is that, though when I last watched it I felt I was watching the whole series more out of a sense of duty than actual interest. Tasty overall, but very much a thing of the past.
That of course changed when I was watching Gundam 00, which was far more gripping story-wise, despite the gist being practically the same... even though the floating-around-naked part was stupendously silly.

Everyone knows that being naked is the only way you can interface directly with electronic devices ... right?

I just marathoned Gurren Lagann yesterday. I watched 8 episodes one day and watched he remaining 19 yesterday. I was not disappointed. For a shounen anime that surprisingly hit all the right buttons. It sets out from the beginning that it's going to be ridiculous, so I had no issue with some of the events being ridiculously unrealistic. Some very cool nuclear imagery in there. The show actually had some very cool points to it. It wasn't just POWERFUL CHARACTERS ARE POWERFUL like most of these shows end up being. The end to it was immensely satisfying, all that jazz of not being confined by your creators choices or idea of fate. Fuck god and all that shit.
All I can say is ...

SUCK IT FRESHBITE!

It always irks me when I put a lot of thought into suggesting something to a specific person based on what they've also liked and then they just reject it out of hand.

What? It's a legitimate question.

I don't know why you all think I mean everything with ill will...

I mean I'm no one to talk, just look at my room:

Gotta love the capitalized "GET OUT" on the left-hand wall. Splendid. I love it.

Can I come over?

Not so well actually. The last girl I slept with would be over a year ago. Then she became a friend and we got into the "friend-zone" people use as an excuse to justify the fact that the girl doesn't like them back. lollll

IT WAS YOUR MOM. OH SNAP.

No really it wasn't her name was Becca and we talked about it at the time.

That is lovely, Ben. Just great.

I was telling the truth from my perspective though. There's not much else to it.
I gave the series a shot, and it failed to deliver according to my demands.

Gurren Lagaan kinda grew on me, kinda like cancer. When I first saw it, I wasn't really impressed but i got on a giant mecha kick when I was watching anime. So I went from Aim for the Top! Gunbuster, to Aim for the Top! Diebuster, to Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann...It was an interesting progression of crazy mecha anime with drills...

See, besides all the sisterly-love and all the feels, this is what makes Gunbuster/Diebuster awesome.

Personally, Gunbuster/Diebuster are my favorites (mostly for being the originals...and tits), but you could say that Gurren Lagann is an evolution of the giant mecha anime since they were all produced by Gainax.

I think the appeal I have for mecha anime like gundam is how well it parallels the legends made during WWI dogfighting.

The idea that a single pilot can have so much influence over his machine and can has so much influence over the battlefield is practically non-existant anymore.

The military does not pamper pilots like they used to and they certainly don't promote the same level of individuality.

Combine that with high levels of mechanical detail in machines and I'm pretty happy.

To me, gurren lagann doesn't really qualify as strictly "mecha" genre anime.

Not here.
I think I mentioned how significant the army is in Israel's society before.
Anyone who serves in the Air Force here gets a lot of perks, both during and after the army.
It's like that because they actually are trained to have total control over their machines (amongst other things).

Here's the best example:
