Wow. That's a screenshot from Battlefield 3. Not some render from a cutscene, but an in-game screenshot.
Damn, this game is starting to look practically photo-realistic in certain areas.
Oh, and for a look at the competition, here's just a little mock-up I did really quickly. Tried to find two similar-ish photos.

Yeah, requiring you to actually aim as opposed to point in the general direction of your enemy and pull down the trigger? What insane developer would ask that of their players?
Of all those the only two I'm considering getting are BF3 and Dead Island, haven't even heard of some of the rest (ie Prey 2, Rage, Dust 514, and Ghost Recon Online) Also, what's up with the Far Cry 3 sights? They look like total shite.

All im saying is that with Marathon and to a lesser extent UT2k3 you get in this mode where you have to take a walk after playing to calm down. I think iron sights get in the way of "OMG AHHHH" moments.
Of the games with sights I like MW2 cause of the RPG element, but they crapped on everyone with the DLCs and coop modes. (on a related but separate rant) I hate activision with a vengeance! Taking a great company like blizzard and ripping out LAN from SC2 was unforgivable. Thats on top of charging 60$ for an expansion???

Well yeah, Activision is a cockface, but I personally like down-the-sights aiming. It's a lot funner when your bullets actually go where you're pointing, in my opinion
Not that I don't like games like Unreal and Halo, I just think there's a certain degree of freedom in having ADS.

That's called an anxiety disorder. That's nothing about how good the games are.Conner36 wrote:All im saying is that with Marathon and to a lesser extent UT2k3 you get in this mode where you have to take a walk after playing to calm down. I think iron sights get in the way of "OMG AHHHH" moments.
Anyway, games like Modern Warfare 2 and Bad Company 2 have hip fire too. I don't get you and Zhukov's logic...surely the point of guns like the FN Fal, ACR, Styr Aug etc. is that they'll generally have sights that you're required to line up with your eye so that you can, you know, see what you're shooting at. You'll still get the panic moments where you run up a stairs and realise you and another person are staring each other in the face and will either have to go for spraying wildly from the hip or going for the inadvisable melee strike.
If you'd watched the trailer for Dead Island, 90% of the game you don't seem to even have a gun, and it's more about running away, surviving and making tough decisions (like robbing some stranded woman's car). So that doesn't really fit in there, but I know they had to think of some other games to fill the numbers.Zhukov wrote:*whistles the most innocent whistle you ever heard*

Also, one of your favourite games, Bioshock, is all about guns and so on. Sure there's plasmids and so on in there, and you don't have the whole iron sights bit, but really you should since not aiming down sights when at range is dumb.
But I realise that your image was slightly tongue-in-cheek, but I still had to clarify that Bioshock is no better when it comes to having some gun porn stuck in there.
The point of that image is not about iron sights specifically. It's that half the games being made revolve around the same damn thing. That is to say, shooting stuff.
Also, I did watch the full gameplay preview for Dead Island. Some neat mechanics like being able to throw melee weapons, but nothing that really caught my attention. Certainly nothing that will live up to that trailer everyone was going gaga about. Oh, and it's a sandbox game, so there will be tedious commutes between objectives and the pacing will automatically be shit. It's the kind of game I buy about a year after release for $15 during a Steam sale. Then I play it while waiting for something genuinely interesting.
As for Bioshock, (oh Christ, here I go) it actually does have iron sight aiming. It's completely useless, but it's there. Mind blown, right?
And, for the record, the shooting is easily my least favourite part of Bioshock. On the one hand it has this awesome narrative about exploring the ruins of a failed utopia built by a would-be industrialist philosopher king. Plus a clever play on linearity and silent protagonists.
But on the other hand, 70% of the gameplay, the actual player activity, consists of shooting people in the face. Or freezing them, setting them on fire, hurling them into the ceiling, sending bees at them, and then shooting them in the face. Meh. Some people dismiss it as a boring 'corridor shooter' and, as much as I love it, I really can't blame them.
Were it up to me, I would have based the game around stealth. Maybe some Riddick-style first person melee for when things get hairy. But then nobody would have bought it... so yeah.
