that would shred the operators of a tank. also I don't believe fifty cal is a misnomer, it's just that when people write it out they ignore the fact that it's .50 caliber, because that's what they do when they say it, nobody wants to say point fifty caliber or point five-oh caliber every time they say it.

I don't know about you, but when I hear "fifty," I think of 50, not .50 or half of one. You're right that nobody would really say "point fifty" caliber, but when you're writing it out like this, I don't think it takes much effort to add the decimal point
