Yeah, my system sucks, and I've known it for a while. It's 3 years old now XD amazing how quickly computers can get obsolete. My main reason for wishing to pick a Mac is that they seem to be cheaper than PCs, but still perform quite well. Being a student I don't have much of a budget. There's also the simplicity of them. It's not like there's hundreds of different varieties of macs out there, each one becoming obsolete as a new one is released.

also on a lesser scale, your game GLFighters is Mac-only and I'm interested in seeing what it's like.

GLFighters is for Mac OS classic, which is not supported anymore in new Macs :? I like Macs a lot, but they are not at all cheaper than PCs. Apple charges much more for the same parts than PC retailers do. PC retailers have to compete with each other and drive down prices, but Apple has a monopoly on Mac hardware.

I think the only reasons to get a Mac are for their ease of use (especially laptops) or if you are a graphics or audio professional.

Well the ease of use is a plus for me, and I am planning on going into interactive multimedia development in the future (I'll be starting 5 years of Computing and Interactive Multimedia related courses after the summer holidays :D I'm aiming for a job as a computer games developer ^_^)

Update: I think I'll meet halfway on this one. I'll keep this (P.O.S :P) PC for now, but I'll purchase a Macbook for its ease of use and portability :D Hopefully this whole Macbook shutdown issue I've been hearing of was just a production fault and won't appear in the Core 2 Duo macbooks :3

Macbooks were updated yesterday, so right now is a the best time to buy. Unfortunately, the crappy graphics card, which is really the weakest part of the Macbooks, was not upgraded, so I hope you are not planning to play a lot of newer games on it. Also, be sure to get at least 2 gigs of RAM for Parallels.

The only games I plan to play on the Macbook are Lugaru and possibly Second Life once I get a wireless network set up. As for Parallels I'll still be using my PC for the more graphic intensive gaming (Macbook for programming and multimedia, PC for games) so I won't really need it. I might still wait a little longer till I buy the MacBook though, because I don't get paid till after the summer holidays and the monthly repayments might be a little hard to keep up during a long unpaid holiday :3

Out of curiosity what is Lugaru 2 being programmed or tested on?

I am not the only L2 programmer (Jeff and Henry are also working on it) but I work on it on my new PC desktop when I am home, and on my Macbook Pro when I am away.

It's mostly true, macintoshes are definitely very stable, but not every programmer manages to get their software to be as stable, so software you install will still crash sometimes. I've rarely ever had the whole system crash/freeze though. I haven't had much time on a windows computer though, so I can't really compare the two.

I've had several software conflict or memory shortage freezes, but I haven't had a kernel panic for months.

I have a computer I've had since 2002. Still works perfectly. Granted, we wiped it there about a few weeks ago, but that was because we had installed so much random shit that we had about 0.2 GB left on the hard drive.

Most of it was probably being ravaged and raped by viruses, because we had loads of spyware and adware and all that stuff. You name it, it was probably on there.

However, we wiped it, and it's now just as good as when we first got it. No problems.

So...what?

What about all the Useless Trial software from Microsoft when you reinstalled?

Ah, that reminds me of the 20 kernel traps I got when using an older version of Clan Lord on 10.1.something. :P

However, I don't think I've ever got a single one on 10.4.anything. Or more than 3 on other apps.

A new Windows installation does not include any trial software.

Haven't a clue what he's on about because my brother reinstalled the OS and everything.

All I know is he wiped it, found the Windows XP CD and reinstalled the OS and now everything is alright again.
