Blorx wrote:The Legend of Zelda Series (NES, SNES, Gameboy, GBC, N64, GBA, Gamecube, Wii) - This should be on the list because it was one the first RPG type game that Nintendo created on its own. It also made history and set some of the guidelines for the genre and over time, has added much to gaming history. Also one of the longest running game series, along with Mario and Final Fantasy.
Yeah it's true it's a very popular series, but shouldn't we pick out the particular games that are good? All the Zelda, Mario and Final Fantasy games weren't fun. Some of them were terrible.

I think Twilight Princess and Ocarina of Time should be up there for sure.
Ocarina of Time was a graphical marvel at the time and was pretty much the showcase for how to transition a series into 3-D.
Twilight Princess is just a refinement and perfection of the 3-D Zelda series.
Final Fantasy 6, like Twilight Princess, is pretty much the refinement of the 2-D Final Fantasy series.
Final Fantasy 7 ushered in the era of 3-D RPGs with impressive graphics and a moody protagonist that paved the way for moody protagonists for years to come in RPGs.

Still, this is a classic game.

Suprised this hasn't been mentioned yet (I don't think):
Marathon 2: Durandal
I say Marathon 2 first because it had some of the cooler weapons and cooler storylines and wasn't as god-awful confusing to the brain like Marathon ∞...

Alright, I'll start on the list
Need more to be official, there are only about 7 or 8 right now...
Halo and Halo 2, as great as they were, they weren't really revolutionary...
Metal Gear Solid should be on there. It was really the first official 3D stealth action game.
the 1942 series should be there, too. They were really some of the first action arcade games where you piloted a plane and scrolled up the screen.

i came for the Lugaru info...i stayed for the video game chat.
Blorx/Grayswandir > i think you nailed it w/ Pong. All Hail Nolan and Atari.
whence would we be w/o them?
i think that he might be singlehandedly responsible for grip strength increasing and thumbs slowly getting larger in humans.
Pong aside...? can i add...
* Ultima 4: storyline...philosophy in an RPG that was engrossing.
* Zork ("i remember sonny when videogames were just words...")
* Autoduel (C64 colors are showing, jah..)
* someone said Simcity, huh?
* Gauntlet (arcade): learn to love and hate your friends all at once.
* Adventure! (atari) damn dragon - taste my arrow. uh i mean sword.
* Maniac Mansion
phew. /end nostalgia mode.
and honorable mention...
the holo chess game R2 kicks arse on in Star Wars for inspiring a whole boat of game designers.
word.

Doukutsu Monogatari (Cave Story) needs to be up there. Not only is it a great freeware action-adventure game, it's just a great action-adventure game in general. It is, in my opinion, a perfect videogame. Not the best videogame ever, mind you, it's just done to perfection.

Frankly, I'm not entirely sure I know what all your hype about Cave Story is. Then again, I haven't played through anywhere near the whole thing…

Much like Lugaru, Doukutsu Monogatari was pretty much a one-man job if I recall corectly. It's got a good soundtrack, gameplay is fast-paced and fun, the script and storyline are good and the English translation is well done. There isn't much _not_ to like about the game.
