Emoticons: Juvenile or Better way to express yourself?
I had a little debate with my friend over rather emoticons are more for younger kids, he says that he considers people who use emoticons a lot to be somewhat immature and unable to express themselves in normal text. I don't typically use them in forums and stuff, (but when I text, it looks something like "Hi :D cx :3 ^_^") but I don't consider them to express immaturity… What do you guys think?

...can't tell if you're serious. If you attach 4 emoticons to a one-word text, I'm going to have to assume that you're a 12 year old girl.
Now for the inevitable 'lol i'm a 14 year old guy silly xD"

Not really, only juvenile when over used.
Re: Emoticons: Juvenile or Better way to express yourself?
I've never considered them to express immaturity per se, but it is very clear to see that any text, post, or communique that lacks emoticons certainly does emanate a certain professionalism or maturity. A kind of glaze of sincerity that even a single emoticon can completely dispel.
When I noticed this a long while back, I went through a phase of never using any emoticons at all, which I think won me some respect from the likes of Renegade_Turner, though I also soon noticed myself to become so stoic and serious as to near the 'bah humbug' level of being bitter, which might've caused me to antagonise a number of people.
'Less emoticons is better for more serious' sounds a bit moot, but it's easy to forget to have fun when you're trying to take yourself seriously, and who can take you seriously if you do that?
Just don't overdo it, that is all.

It was exaggeration for humor's sake.

Psh… I'm 16…
Also, I agree with everything you guys have said, like I said, I hardly ever use emoticons on forums.

This discussion has turned weird...
Now hurry up with the drama, else the viewers get bored.

Okay, I was gonna type out this long thingy about stereotypes and such and how I shouldn't be judged for my age and shiz, but I won't, I'll just say this:
*ahem* I will try my hardest to be a respected and somewhat mature fourmer (most of the time) and try to earn respect despite my young immature age… blah blah blah.
Now, lets all come together as friends in a community, put aside our differences in age, and opinions on emoticons, and murder bunnies violently, because that's what we're here for right?
(This sounded a lot better in my head)
