How is it depressing? A computer is a computer; a tool used for work and entertainment. If you have to choose one or the other, go with the one you like better. You aren't going to get the "perfect computer" with either Apple or Windows ("Windows" encompassing Alienware, Dell, IBM. Compaq, etc...), but you might as well choose the one that has more pros than cons for you.

I'm pretty sure most of you should realise that this concept is in fact so far out of anyone's reach that we'll probably even succeed in world peace before we reach this.

Hmmm... maybe your on to something...
In order to create world peace, we must make a computer system to rule us.
While under the repressive rule of this super computer (made, NOT by Microsoft) we will learn a new place in the world. We will have a computer deciding all the stuff thats important. Humans have botched too many things. This is perfect :)

Except we'd have to program the computer with complex and realistic thinking, which is practically impossible with today's technology. And even then, how does anyone define what is and isn't important to us?

Besides, that just sounds like the plot of a sci-fi robot uprising.
