Well, Glabbit, can I learn some Glun-fu? Because two and a half years of Kenpo karate will not help you against a mugger, but 4 years of american football will.

I myself had about a month or two of karate, as well. Years before that I did a year of Judo, which I thought sucked. Since then I've returned to semi-actively practising Aikido, as I have done for 40% of my life, a martial art DESIGNED to defend yourself against anything ranging from fists through wooden knives to wooden katana's and Jo's, by means of evasion and disarming.
Maybe you're getting uuber-crappy instructors :/

Did you read any of that or just see the word "instructor"?

So you taught yourself everything you want to know about karate from breaking wood?

Okay, Starrz I'm like 96% sure that you are practicing with FAKE knives. In which case you've never experianced the total fear of death that comes with facing someone holding a real one. Hell I get freaked out when one of my clumsy friends is holding one. But when you are face to face with someone who can kill you in 3 seconds very easily and won't hesitate to do it, all of that training doesn't matter. If your ever in a situation like that I really hope that you will be wise enough to not try and fight. You will lose. You will get hurt. And you will make many people in your life very very sad. You can get revenge when they finally catch the guy, then you go outside his cell with a big pointy stick wearing a mask and poke him for awhile. =)

Or you could just fill his cell with Petrolium and chuck a match in and laugh you ass off while you watch him scream and panic like an animal.
Vengance is best served flame grilled then snap chilled to lock in that non-fatting flavor!
I will admt though, rengance is Morish and is never satifying except until you realize there is nothing left to stand in your way of it, cause you just tokyo holocaust it! When its yours, grasp it and embrace its chill. If you end up trying to kill yourself afterwards, that was not Vengance...

Okay, i have a blue belt in Tae-kwon-do. and you learn in school that if you're held up in the parking lot, you're not going to do any thing, you're not going to kick his ass, you'd be stupid to do that. when you learn TKD you NEVER want to use that training ever. people who haven't been train in martial arts just don't understand this for some reason. you're not going to do any thing if a mugger comes up, you're going to try and keep it cool, do what he says, and then call the cops. you're NOT going to kick him in the face!..... okay... i think I've made my point Starz and any one else who thinks like him.

2 years of TKD and a blue/green belt and I entirely agree with you. TKD is about kicking, but in a real fight, everyone is far too close.
Martial arts are just that. An art. Not a weapon.

I disagree. Go try and confront an army combatant with a knife and see what happens to you, invertin.
Tae-kwon-do looks more like dancing then a martial art TBH, but you can't use the ineffectiveness of one martial art as a generalizition for all fighting styles. When you're talking about serious defensive or offensive martial arts, they are most certainly weapons, and deadly ones at that. Now, a kid who just took karate for a year would probably get his ass kicked by any average kid his own age who's been in at least three fights before. Human instinct along with trial and error understanding are better then 95% of all martial arts- but there's that 5% of fighting styles (CQC, HTH, MAC, OHWS, FCS, etc) that makes the instinctual understanding of fighting even more effective. I like how David compared the body to a machine, and he's fully correct about it working like this- you need to know how to make your machine run smoothly and efficiently. Think of a car engine; accelerate in a quick, coarse manner, don't change the oil, rapidly decelerate, overheat it, etc, and you're gonna need a new engine pretty soon. Take care of it properly and your engine will almost never fail.

Hmmm... well put.
I have to admit, the power in Aikido, indeed, is the reflexes it embodies in your body. (lolpun)
I've heard several stories of the type that aikidoists get in traffic accidents, fly through the air a bit after impact, instinctively do a ukemi (roll) and end up with minimal body damage.
(Guy ended up stunting over a roundabout, parted from his motorbike in mid-air, flew several yards further, ukemi'd, and only bruised his collar bone. Although It might have been broke. Can't remember.)

If you ever get closer than your arms legth from your foe your dry humping your enemy, and that is a big fail. In the david is correct, up until the point of miricals do happen. mirricals that are medicly impossable.

I dunno about everywhere else, but fights around my area normally turn into "grab him and beat the crap out of him" which is not very conductive for kicking.
