Re: I got mugged
nothing should be messed with, though thanks to modern medicine there is a far higher chance you'll survive if you are dumb enough to mess with muggers. course it really depends on what kind of mugger it is, if it's the fourteen year old, took his dad's pistol has no clue how to check if it's loaded, has the safety on and is holding it sideways all "gangsta" style, I think you can feel a bit safer than if it's a 30 year old war vet on steroids holding up a military issue weapon. still don't mess with either if you can avoid it.
p.s. David does your store take mail orders?

True, thank god, but is could still cause many disabilities unfortunately, like hinderance of movement and whatnot if the wound is bad enough. Or an infection of somekind could make you lose that limb altogether. But you should live hopefully, unless the guy is a true physcopath.Count Roland wrote:nothing should be messed with, though thanks to modern medicine there is a far higher chance you'll survive if you are dumb enough to mess with muggers.

Re: I got mugged
(been away for two days)
lol, nice David. if that's true, lets have some info on that store, I'd shop there.
@ragdollmaster: a .22 is nothing to be afraid of. there have been reported survivals of headshots with .22's. a knife disarm will work relatively well against a gun, but there are other disarm techniques that are more efficient, and a great deal safer. (i.e. right hand: shove barrel far to the left. left hand: punch back of attackers elbow upward. pull gun away. this would be for a right handed gunman.)
anyway yes, that did break this threads moral, so I'll restate it:
Try to avoid muggers and muggings, as there is substantial danger involved.

Dont do the elbow thing. Punch em in the throat.

Re: I got mugged
the problem with that is that they may not let go of the gun. at least when you punch their elbow, if they don't let go from the pain, their arm will be a bit weaker from the impact. though, punching them in the throat will shock them and they may let go automatically... either way, the idea is to force the barrel away from yourself then stun them so you can take the gun away.

@Lotus: A .22 is a small game hunting caliber, but it's still going to hurt a LOT if you get shot point blank with one of those. Enough so that if you were fired upon in close range that any idea of a disarm or fighting back would escape from your mind due to the overload of painful stimulation.
Re: I got mugged
The idea is to make so they have trouble breathing. That makes it hard to do anything.

Sandurz: that's very true.
Ragdollmaster: it was a .22 pistol, same caliber as a pellet gun. yeah, it hurts a lot, but it's hardly fetal. but you're right, if i had been shot by it, i probably wouldn't have been able to put up any effective resistance.

Re: I got mugged
Lotus, have you ever been shot with any kind of gun? It hurts like hell, I've been shot with a pellet gun, and that hurt like hell. I have a scar on my arm from it. The weapon caliber that kills the most people is the .22. I own a .22 caliber Remington rifle, I've got a hunters license, and I've been hunting. Most animals don't survive gunshots, and most animals are tougher than humans. My point is it's not just going to hurt a lot, it's probably going to kill you. Lets just say the bullet hits you in the ass for some reason, its not just going to go in half and inch, it's going to tear muscle tissue, tear veins, and if it hits a major artery, your screwed. Let's say you get shot in the stomach, It's going to (depending on what kind of ammo you using) either bounce around in you stomach doing all kinds of damage. It'll shred you're innards, tear veins, and in most cases kill you . If you get hit in the chest it'll bounce of you ribs, and possible puncture you lungs, heart, or major arteries. If you get hit in the arms same problem.
Re: I got mugged
And that's before you remember how kinetic energy is transfered.
Laymens terms- Bullets go very fast.
And when a fast thing hits something else, the non-fast thing is affected all over instead of just that one spot. You know how in movies people go flying backwards when they are shot? Yeah. Not quite like that, the kinetic energy won't send you backwards, it will mess your insides up instead.

Wow, it's a good thing other sensible people posted here. I cursed out loud at some of the more stupid comments...
I haven't had to really fight, ever, but I've been thinking about related things for a while, and I have learned something that I believe defines the difference between martial arts and fighting:
If you have never fought, you can't fight.
Sparring is NOT fighting. Using a wooden knife is NOT fighting!
Some martial arts, like aikido and krav maga, use more realistic scenarios and training schemes, where you don't know what your opponent will do and have to react fast. In both aikido and krav maga, you might also find yourself alone against more than one opponent.
Black belt is an achievement. It means you're best of the best, tougher than the everydudes. It also means that, if you get really lucky, you might be actually able to use some of what you learned in a real fight, without getting hurt too badly.
Finally, you CAN win. Sometimes you luck out and beat two guys without a scratch, or kick the other guy's leg and he falls down, or manage to knock him out in a single fright-powered punch. Perhaps you even really are like the guys in movies, fast as lighting and have perfect timing. Just keep in mind it goes both ways, and the OTHER guy may also luck out.
