A nice trick for sqeezeing the best performance out of games

Post by Dudeman » Sun Jul 19, 2009 11:25 am

NOTE: Only for those with small monitors at high resolutuions

I have a 23 inch monitor that is 1920x1080, and that resolution, as you can imagine, is high enough that running it in crysis with everything maxed gives me a fair amount of choppiness, now if I run crysis at 1024x720, I cant tell the difference unless I get really close to my monitor, and I get almost twice the framerate, plus I can finally turn anti-aliasing up to 8x without dropping below 29 fps.

This can be applied to any game, and I have already applied it to Far Cry 2

And yes I did notice I spelled Squeezing wrong

In some games, it even happens to have better performance at higher resolutions.

Yeah, it's rather illogical, but still. :lol:

Most monitors run best at their native resolution, which for yours might have been on the high end.

Hum... not really. I do not have the budget to have an high end monitor. ^^;

Actually, I though it was best to run at native resolution just for best image quality, but I don't really know it can effect performance that way.

I think it more affects the refresh rate, which can make it look a bit laggy.

All in all though, it shouldn't matter that much.

You mean the vertical sync, right? Actually, it makes games running smoother by stabilizing the fps basing on the refresh rate of the monitor. It reduce the image tearing, which makes games looking slower at higher fps (or something like that).

"...If you're not willing to take a hit on the quality of the visual effects then your only other option is to lower the resolution. This will give a large performance increase, but dropping below the native resolution on an LCD will result in a noticeably jaggier image. How pronounced this is will depend on how well your display is able to scale the lower resolution image to fill your screen."
