Lately I've been listening to some Kayo Dot and maudlin of the Well. The only way I can really describe it is "interesting". maudlin of the Well's new album can be downloaded for free (legally, of course) from their website, http://www.maudlinofthewell.net/ and Kayo Dot's latest is streaming online at http://www.bluelambencydownward.com/

Despite her seeming inability to cope mentally with the pressures of suddenly being thrust into the limelight, when before this she was an old lady living in obscurity (with her cat), Susan Boyle is an amazingly talented singer. I really can't stress this enough.
At the risk of sounding painfully cheesy, this is an incredibly blatant message of rags-to-riches. Susan Boyle's story really demonstrates how anyone, actually anyone, can make an impact on the world. They just need their chance, and a bit of luck.
Regardless, she's note-perfect. Her speaking voice is such a difference from her singing voice...I know that is the case with most people, but you really don't fully understand the concept until you hear Susan Boyle talk, and then sing. I was awe struck the first time I heard her sing a note.

But of course! Illegal piracy of music, crazy concept altogether.

Here's someone a bit different to Susan Boyle.
Lowkey is amazing. The alliteration will baffle you, so this should help you follow:
Lowkey wrote:Illustrious illustrator, illest in the industry, illicitly cause illiterate idiots injury. Impatient 'cause Illuminati impede my innovations, while ignorant imbeciles idolise my imitations.
This is hiphop when it's good, when it's about your lyricism, like Wu-Tang Clan or Immortal Technique, and not about your mainstream appeal, like 50 Cent or Chingy.
The band Chord (including Trevor De Brauw of Pelican). Why yes, that is one single Amin7 chord, played for the entire 15 minute song. Minimalism never sounded so good.
Lots of good songs. I love Modest Mouse, Mazzy Star, Mark Knopfler and The Pixies to an extent. That was not the song I would have chosen by Mazzy Star.
I love this song more:
When I'm driving at night, I play that song over and over again. It's so serene. Puts you perfectly at ease.
Also, The National, who I'd never really listened to before, seem pretty awesome. I always expected they were going to be another band like Franz Ferdinand or something, I don't know why. Probably the name. Do you think the singer kind of sounds like a mix between Johnny Cash and Bruce Springsteen?

The National doest remind me a tad of Mr. Cash. As for "Into Dust"--I prefer it over "Fade Into You", but the latter is more of a crowd-pleaser. I only have So Tonight That I Might See...I need to get the other albums. Hope Sandoval is one of the only female singers I can tolerate.
I just went searching for some new music, here are the albums that I found and that are destined to make me broke:
On another note, I can't listen anymore--Grados are the most goddamn uncomfortable headphones on earth. I'm tempted to go back to my Sennheisers.

True. "Into Dust" is more of a music afficionado's song.

We're agreed on that. Very seldom do I find a band with a female lead singer that I actually like. Although, for the definitive band of women kicking everyone else's ass, check out some Heart. The guitar intro is so orgasmic.

This is the only place in your post where my views differ from yours. The only thing albums I want will do to me is increase my total bytes downloaded, and possibly cause me to reach my ISP's download cap. I don't have the money to be buying all the music I crave, there's too much music and I always need a new fix!

I also often have this problem. Wearig eaphones or headphones for long periods often causes my ears to hurt, and when it happens sometimes I have to stop listening to my MP3 or whatever for a day. I hate having to take a break from being able to listen to music.
Also, lately I've been noticing that sometimes when I have my MP3 volume set too high my inner ears begin hurting. Never happened before.

more minimalistic/atmospheric music:
Greymachine: a collaboration including Godfesh/Jesu(/Napalm Death)'s Justin Broadrick and Isis's Aaron Turner. It's fairly harsh at times, and a little hard to listen to, but quite interesting. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Itt5P8fJNyY
Jodis: Another project including Turner (this time on vocal duties only), this one also including James Plotkin of Khanate. Fairly minimalistic, with a dark and somewhat unconventional sound. http://www.jodis-secrethouse.com/ (Recommended: "Follow the Dogs", "Waning")
