Something weird cometh the industry's way

Post by camino1961 » Thu Nov 05, 2009 11:41 am

I'm not looking to start any flame wars on criticism against any other companies. I am greatfull to the advances the gaming industry has made. That said:

1. First UNITY releases their game engine for free and...
2. Now EPIC is releasing the UNREAL engine tools for free,

either there is some sort of paradigm shift happening in the industry, or,
could people be noticing the ease of use and excitement about the Wolfire "Phoenix Engine"?

I've always said and live by the fact that "if you make it easy to understand and use, people will notice and support it".

Go Wolfire!
Go Phoenix engine!

Seems like it's from Valve's influence and modding community.

How so? The Valve community has been doing it for years with Half Life and Half Life 2 mods.
Why would UNITY and EPIC be influenced all of a sudden?
Though I feel that the UNREAL tech is awesome, It is not as user friendly as the Phoenix engine.
I've always wanted tools that would get me up and running straight away.

It's very curious, and, come to think of it, I wonder who's going to follow next?

They've probably just made some management decisions now, that they didn't consider before to create more support for the Unreal Engine. They probably have seen over the years how successful Valve has been with releasing the tools to everyone, and just now decided to jump on the bandwagon.

Community based content is getting a lot more publicity nowadays, too, with games like Little Big Planet pushing for easy to use editing suites.
