Well, I decided to try my hand at it. In turn, I've realized that if I want to do well at this, I need to make things twice as large as I originally intend them to be.

Blorx, you should really concider using the WoM client. (World of Minecraft)
It allows you to fly which is a great benefit when building tall objects such as these.

Using the WoM client definitely pulls down the construction-time to about 50%.

Hey, with the advent of the downloadable version, does anybody know what happened to creative mode?

It's now called "Minecraft Classic", just below Minecraft Alpha (the one you have to buy to play)

Ah, I thought that was the survival mode or something.
