I use the Final Cut Suite and Adobe After Effects for my video work, though I realize that this is isn't necessary for those who want to do simple editing.
I recently TA'd for a class which used to use Final Cut, and the professor switched to iMovie so that the students would have an easier time editing. IT WAS AWFUL. The new iMovie interface is like a Word document. It is extremely difficult to work with or do anything precisely.
My recommendation for those who just want to do some simple editing: get Final Cut Express, or Adobe Premiere. Whatever is cheaper.
