Need help

Post by Blorx » Tue Mar 02, 2010 5:35 pm

I just spent an hour trying to come up with a good character for a platformer.

I can't do it for some reason. I start out with my pixel art and always end up with something that I don't want.

How do people come up with characters like Gomez (Fez), Kirby, Quote (Cave Story), and such?

EDIT: I shelved the MUD idea to try and pull out of online gaming a bit and work on something that would give me more graphical experience.

Caveman!
I created him for a school project where we were suppose to develop a game.

I know it's not that stylish, but I thought it was an original look.
Btw, the background is pink because we used Game Maker, in which you can choose a color to be transparent in an image. It just so happened to be pink.

1. Think of the weirdest thing you can think of.
2. Now personify it. Give it arms and feet. No mouth though.
3. Warp it to fit your game style (cute, noir, action, etc.)
4. ???
5. Profit!

Lol, TBC. I tried that. I'm still brainstorming, though, so maybe something will come to me. *shrugs*

Grah, just frustrated now. Keep trying to make stuff and end up ripping off someone else's style. :(

Now he will rip off your style.

I suggest he uses Blorx the Flying 2002 Calendar.

Ok, so the game is a platformer. So how do you want your character to get around from platform to platform? Go from there.

Good point. I'm going at this the wrong way. Thanks Gray!

Just start doodling and see what comes of it. The easiest characters to make are generally the simplest.
