Your honesty amazes me. Until 6 months ago, I had never played chess before either.

Considering I was 19 when I first played, I don't think you have anything to worry about. I'm pretty sure you're a lot younger than me. There's no rushing into chess, it's a tricky game and playing it too quickly can be more damaging than rewarding.

In fact, I hadn't even ever set up the chess board until 10 months ago tomorrow.

But I have to agree. Sandurz, there's still time, you don't need to feel pressured to play chess. After all, chess is only really worth while, when having the right opponent. And I am sure you'll find the right one sooner or later. As with Ren it took me some time for that, too.
