ok guys need some serious help here

Post by zoidberg rules » Thu Apr 15, 2010 3:17 am

when i switched my 360 on this morning, there was this really loud noise, im talking the sort of noise that's louder than the cooling fans themselves!

i've said to myself that im gonna leave it off for a couple of days, and if it still does this im gonna try to get it looked at by somebody who knows about this sort of thing.

any suggestions of what i could do?? i bought it last january and didnt imagine myself having this sort of trouble for a long time to come, any suggestions about what could be wrong?

P.S. just thought i should mention that im pretty sure that it's the disk drive making this noise, because it stops when the drive isnt running, and it didnt make the noise earlier when i was playing a game i had installed onto my hard-drive. either that or it's the cooling fans, because i havent played a great deal of any other games than the ones on my hard drive recently, could it just be because the fans havent been used to that extent for a while? or is it (good god i hope not) that it may be failing?

any help is well appreciated guys :?

EDIT: somebody has that problem and posted a vid of it on youtube, theirs only does it when COD WaW is in, i read some comments, so i decided to check it against another game. it only makes that noise when gears 2 is in, i checked by putting in L4D2, fine, GOW2 straight after, loud buzzing noise, L4D2 again, just to be sure, fine again.

one of the comment said it depends on how scratched the disk is, the more scratched it is, the closer to the disk the reader has to be, causing part of the reading assembly to push itself against a moving part. makes sense to me, but what do you guys think?

Download game to hard drive, play game from hard drive instead of disk, loud noises stop.

Well if you take decent care of your disks, its most likely an unbalanced disk, which will cause it to make noises in the drive. However, like R_T said, if you're really worried about it, install the game on your HD and play it from there.

Sorry for the necromancy here, but my PC is playing up and thought that this would be the best thread to put it on.

Basically, my PC will randomly restart without any given warning, then do it again on the XP startup screen, again just after it, again on the log in screen, then again just after I start the internet up. I got taken to a web page after the last instance and it told me it is suffering from "stop errors" or "blue screens".

We're getting it stripped down and cleaned up in about two weeks, but I'm not sure if that will fix the problem, any advice??

Note: How much does a Gig or so of RAM cost in £??

EDIT: Also after the last time, I watched the disk cleaning screen for anything the PC said was wrong, and it said that it was fixing errors in "Index$I30 for file 72". It then said that it was deleting "Index Entry 597140c1-e145-408e-9697-7694262d6217.tmp" then that it deleted "Index Entry 597140~1.tmp"

Dunno if they mean anything in particular but I just thought it might be best to put that out there... :?

Could be faulty memory, or a virus. If it's memory, you should write down the motherboard type and make sure that you get a type of RAM that works with it. If it's a virus, you could try booting the computer from e.g. a linux CD, one of those that don't need an installation. I don't know if Linux-based antivirus applications finds windows-only viruses, but at least that way you could see if it's likely to be a faulty hardware. I doubt software errors could cause problems when you're using a different OS straight from a CD.

I might do that, if it is a virus though, I'll probably just start it up in safe mode, still, no problems for the last few days *touch wood*

Invertin, Theshadowinside and I all know who you are Lang, so we know that the only reason you said that is because we've told you about it... :?

Still, we got the tmp. files removed last night, and we defragged the PC too, and it's working better already! :D
