A guy where my dad works is selling an old computer, we haven't asked how much yet, but I'm just wondering what you guys think it would be worth in £.

I'll just write all the specs I have here.

Intel celeron R 2.8Ghz

CPU Socket 775

500GB hard drive

Windows XP version 2002 SP3

1 GB RAM NVIDA Geforce4 AGP X8 MX 4000 64 MB graphics card

DVD/CD ROM burner (RW)

BENQ 17 in flat screen monitor

Any ideas??

Is the CPU Single, Dual or Quad-core?

I wouldn't buy that computer at all.
Perhaps I would extract the harddrive and buy that.

celeron = trash

AGP = you aren't running any games for the last 4 to 5 years

XP is ok but nearly 10 years old

GeForce 4 is weak. MX is the cheap bargain basement versioning

it's junk unless it's selling for $10

Buy it for all the moneyz of the world ...

All I would really use it for would be browsing the internet and doing A-level coursework, so...

@ Freshbite, I haven't got a clue...

The main reason I am even looking at it is because the PC I am using at the moment just keeps randomly turning itself off, I think this is due to an overheating problem, in which case, I can have it fixed within the next few weeks, but the main problem I have is with the crappy 512 MB of RAM, which mean that, even just running a youtube video in full screen maxes out the RAM, and the PC tends to crash then also.

In which case, how much would I be looking at for a decent sized RAM chip?

And would it be worth getting this PC and striping it down for things like the RAM chips, if it is going to work out cheaper for me, or would I just be better off buying new RAM chips?

EDIT: I know it runs slower, but would it be any sort of a good idea to run all of my files from a second, external hard drive, and changing the partitioning of my current HD to utilise a lot more PF space for virtual RAM, until I can get a decent RAM chip installed?

in theory, your 512mb could be upgraded, but it would be cheaper still to save up for a new computer or shop around for a cheaper better used one.

You would see little benefit from moving your files to external drive other than data safety. Copy them over, but as a backup.

I don't know how much he wants for it, I'll find out ASAP though.

I wouldn't pay very much at all for that. Definitely not more than the worth of the hard drive and dvd burner (seeing as those are the only two parts that seem salvageable). Don't pay more than $20 (prolly 10 to 12 euros).
Edit: 1 Euro is $1.29 so more like 15 or 16 euros.

virtual RAM is almost completely useless. don't bother with it.
