So like Apple to prevent the built-in screen cap function when DVD Player is open. Like that's gonna stop us.

Anyone who's been annoyed by this in the past has probably looked it up on google and discovered the proper Terminal command to enter, thus bypassing this silly restriction. I have successfully wasted 10 minutes of my life and made a simple Applescript program that does the command stuff for you.

Anyone who wants their hands on it, feel free to download it and spread it around.

Instructions: when you open it up, you will see crosshairs. You can either select a portion of the screen to capture like normal or press the space bar. If you do that, the crosshairs change into the camera icon and you can then click any open window for a full res screen cap. Unfortunately cannot work with DVD Player fullscreen. If anyone knows how to do this, I'd love to hear.

Oh, it hadn't occurred to me that there was some kind of Terminal-based workaround for that. I always just went over to VLC instead and struggled with its inability to pause promptly.

As far as not being able to take full-screen shots goes, that's just as well, IMO. When you capture the window, you're getting it at the original resolution, not an image that's been stretched and resampled at the whim of your particular screen resolution — you can do that yourself later, under finer control, if you really want.

Actually, you should be thanking Apple in this case. They're probably well aware that the workaround is quite simple, but some contractual obligation put the restriction there in the first place. If they wanted to, they could certainly prevent you from having the ability to disable it via Terminal. But they didn't.

Hehehe, I'm not rich enough to afford an apple anything, I had to save for a few months, use my money I got at christmas and ask my dad to chip in £25 just to get an iPod touch, mind you that one was 4th Gen, which I wasn't after, but whatever, I got a 4th Gen and it's pretty damn awesome!
