Re: Would you read the OG manual? (If there was one)

If I got confused about how to use the map editor and / or console, I definitely would: truth be told, having not played the alphas to any serious extent (my main computer is a G5 — which I'm using now — and the only Mac with Intel in the house is a MacBook), so I did get somewhat confused by how to go about doing things, namely adding objects.

So yeah, you have to figure that if one person gets confused (e.g. me :P), there are going to be others. The trick is making the manual obviously accessible somehow, since, as Jeff said in that thread you linked to, "99% of people won't read it". Maybe an optional, well integrated tour, or a place onscreen that could either bring up said tour and / or FAQ?

something like a DVD menu-type thing for video tutorials would be nice, but take up a lot of space and might as well be released separately by a player.

The instruction manual is something I read while we're driving home from the game store or something. These days you rarely need to read the manual (from what I think) because there' usually in-game tutorials and such. In earlier times you'd need to read manuals to know certain controls and such, however.

What's the point of this poll when there is a discussion already going on about it?

The worth of one's opinion is not dependent at all on how many others agree with them.

As I said before, if you want a manual, make a wiki. The entire community could contribute, it'll be a lot more cost effective, can be a lot more in-depth and it'll save trees.
