Unofficial, alpha 26 weekly build

Post by Jeff » Tue May 12, 2009 3:59 am

The unofficial, alpha 26 leaked build is here!

A "leaked build" is when John and I literally grab the latest SVN build and package it up for you guys. It has a ton of known bugs, so don't worry if it doesn't work for you. It is not condoned by David, Phillip, and Aubrey, but we want to keep you guys in the loop and give you stuff to play with regularly! Please report bugs in Trac! http://trac.wolfire.net/spf/overgrowth

*NOTE* Please remember that these are unofficial alphas and they do not represent a finished product. They are not even polished builds, just straight up raw development dumps not intended for public consumption.

New in this version: (see blog)

Also, press F to toggle wireframe stuff. Press 8 and 9 to toggle the Rabbot. Press ` for the console. Type Console.help() for the console commands. Press b to spawn a physics box, right click to drag it around. Press r to spawn a ragdoll and F1 for WebKitten.

We are testing out BitTorrent DNA this week! Please let me know how that goes.
Windows: (direct) (torrent) (BitTorrent DNA)
Mac OS X: (direct) (torrent) (BitTorrent DNA)

Note! No PPC, 10.4 Tiger, or Linux support at the moment -- we are waiting on Google Chrome for these. We are not sure when this will happen.

Uploads should be done in ~1 hour, sorry for the false alarm ;)

Uh, yeah... I'd like to sign up for that Alpha-waiters Anonymous program. :(

Man, can you imagine how long the wait will be when this game's size climbs into the gigabytes, and the download...

Cmd-2 to switch into decal editing mode, and then use the load button or cmd-l to pull up the browser.

Hmm, perhaps eventually they will end up compressing everything in a way similar to what the source engine does,
Or more likely at some point they will build in an updater that will make the program update itself, basically like SVN but that even the non-computer-savy users can use.

It would be cool if you guys helped Tonjevic maintain his SVN mirror. Then everyone can update just the modified files :)

Alphas 9, 25 and 26 all refuse to execute. WinXP (Pro, 32-bit, Finnish) just tells me that 'kokoonpano' (probably "build") doesn't work right (perhaps "is corrupt") and suggests that I reinstall the application.

I presume I'm missing something (dll files?) Overgrowth requires, but I have no idea what that'd be, and I don't know what the error message is in English so I'm having trouble searching for similar problems.

I think the error message is this one, or one similar to it:
"The application could not start because its configuration is incorrect, re-installing this application might fix this problem."

Using: late '08 MBP, 2.63 GHz Core2Duo, 4GB ram, Nvidia 9600M GT, 512 Vram, MacOS 10.5.6

A26 Mac rundown

The usual Disclaimer: These are merely suggestions/ free-form obvervations. Some of these I might have missed in earlier versions, some might be redundant, and I do know that this is only an alpha and so many things still need to be improved/optimized or might be on the list already to be changed in the near future. Some of what I say you may even disagree with, so feel free to comment, but please, be constructive =)

(+) means that it's good, (-) that it's bad, (/) Other/Neutral

(again, this has been split into separate parts to make viewing/commenting easier.)

Physics

Sounds
(+) Punching and objects hitting stuff now make sounds.
(+) The super loud mac sound bug has been fixed, my eardrums thank you.
(+) All sounds play slow in slow-mo-mode, just like in the original Lugaru. very nice.

Physics Objects
(-) Ragdolls enter a weightless slow motion state when moved too fast: Video
(+) Physics Objects spawn smoke clouds when they hit stuff...
(-) ...however the smoke cloud texture is broken Image
(I'm loving that error message though)
