Suspension Custom Map

Post by Jacktheawesome » Sun Jul 31, 2011 8:31 pm

Hey guys, I'm a bit early on my 2 week estimate for a new map...turns out I had time today and because of its simplicity my new map didn't take me all that long to build. Without further ado...

In this map, the objective is to complete the course, and end where you started. This map is highly Parkour-intensive; even people with a fair mastery of the controls can expect to spend a little time on this one. I can do it though, so I have faith in you guys :) It is made a little easier with a hint I took from Mirror's Edge, which is color coded surfaces. This might help in some situations where the intended route is slightly ambiguous.

As usual, I cannot upload the skybox. Download blue3.tga from this link, courtesy of Anton. Data>Textures>Skies.
Have fun! :D

Haha, very nice map, Jack. But are you sure it's possible? I can do the first jump (Most of the time) but I can't even get past the second bit right after that red platform you plummet to.

The second bit's definitely the hardest. I have done it several times though. If you aren't already doing this, try holding space for as long as possible on the first two planes, then, when you cross over to the next two, press shift immediately upon contact with each one. Every time I made it this is what I did. Also, do you flip off of walls, or jump off of them? Some people jump off of walls, which is much more inconvenient, as you have to let go of space and then press it again, instead of just pressing shift and holding space. Sorry if you know all of this, just making sure you're doing it right :)
Other than that, it just takes getting the hang of it; it is definitely possible.

Haha. I've been kind of mixing space and shift. I find that going from the first plane to the second, flip or jump, tends to cause me to hit it at too shallow an angle. I then just tap the wall once and fall away. I'll give it another try. It's very fun, though.

Yeah you really want to stick to the first two walls as much as you can, so you jump off of the second wall as close to the edge as possible. That will give you the best possible angle. Thanks! :)

Ah. Place the xml in Data>Levels, and then when you load the game, type "Suspension.xml" into the custom map loader. You may have some texture issues, which are due to missing sky textures. If you do have these (you'll know if you do), download "blue3.tga" from the last link in my original post, and install as indicated there.

Well if you don't have much familiarity with the controls I suggest practicing on something easier until you get the hang of the timing, because the truth is that second bit will be hard even for people who know the controls inside and out. I gave Korban3 some advice earlier in this thread about the best timing and angle for this jump, but if you are just starting with the system I suggest getting the hang of walljumping itself first. Good luck! :)

I thought it was, you just made a fool of that second jump though! I thought it would take you at least two tries! Lol but then you fell on almost all of the easiest parts :D

I cut out the parts where I failed around 50 times. :P
It's just not fun to look at.
The first walljump thing was a bit hard, the second was insane, and the last one was not too hard.

What do you mean by second one? Do you mean the one where you go really fast? Because for me, that was one of the easiest parts! I don't think I ever fell on the final version of that. The first walljump with the opposing curved walls took me several tries every time I went through it, and I created the damn thing...
Lucky for me I was in the process of making it, so I gave myself checkpoints
