Newbie fighting (video)

Post by viralplatipuss » Wed Aug 17, 2011 12:37 am

Hey everyone!

Just found out about Overgrowth today and had to preorder it 10 seconds after watching the latest alpha video update! :D

Been practising my fighting skills all day, just wanted to share a video of me taking down two armed rabbits with no weapon. (Yes, I'm quite pleased with myself)

This is on the latest alpha build. Anyone else got any cool videos of them fighting that they feel like sharing?

That's pretty cool. Reinforces the importance of the crouch.
I avoid crouching now because I always use C to crouch, shift was just awkward, so I remapped it, but C also toggles the hostility (something I couldn't remap as far as I remember) so every time I crouch they become docile. My fighting is not going to be up to scratch for some time, I think.

Haha thanks Endoperez. :D

Not going to lie, it took a while to finally kill 3 armed rabbits without a weapon. I got continuously sliced about 100 times lol.

MasterMorality, don't you find shift is in just the right place for your pinky finger when using WASD?

I went a bit further and managed 4 armed vs me (unarmed).

Who wants to attempt the 5 on 1? :P

(sorry for the slightly more laggy video, I had other stuff open while playing)

Yup. I used little finger on A, forefinger on F and shift it to C when I need to crouch in games. I also use F for various things if it's necessary.
Still, temporary, personalised, setback aside - you're damn good.

These videos are amazing. I just got the game yesterday and I'm getting schooled. Are there any fighting tips you could lend?

Also... How do you judo throw? (Not the actual key, but how do you execute it?) Can I offensively attack with it (meaning just judo throw whenever?) or is it a counter that requires his attack first? And one more question: When the enemy starts playing offensively, forcing you to block, how do you know when to attack next? I constantly get countered and then floored. It seems like there's some golden opportunity that arises for you to attack, but I don't know where /when that is.

Yeah I only got the game yesterday as well, and was getting constantly killed for hours lol.

I'm pretty sure it's just me continuing to hold right click when countering that throws them, if I just tap it then it will counter but not throw. Can anyone confirm this? (I'm still a n00b)

Although I wouldn't recommend throwing someone when there's several other guys around you with swords about to slice through you lol. But if you get a chance where you break a group of them up (or you're only fighting one) then it gives you enough time to finish it and still be ready for the next attack.

As for getting the right timing for defending and attacking, I've just kind of got used to it from repeatedly fighting but it's still a bit of guess work really.

I don't know if any of these tips will be useful, but here's what I do:

I find that if you jump and left click, you're pretty likely to take someone out in one shot with little risk of getting hurt, although this almost feels like cheating a bit (I did this with the very first guy in the group of 4) Although I maintain that it was still harder than it looks, if you load up with 4 guys WITH weapons and try to jump kick the group, one of them will manage to slash you in mid-air unless you get the timing and positioning right.

It also took me a while to learn the valuable lesson that as soon as you're on the floor for whatever reason, press crouch as fast as you can to roll back into standing (I'd also hold the direction key opposite to where the opponent is to put distance between you, and not get kicked while down).

When someone has a sword, if you run quickly towards them dead-on and left click it seems that you can always get a blow in before they can slice you due to the slowness of the weapon. So I always make my first approach an offensive one. But if there's a group you need to be ready to very quickly dodge other incoming attacks, so this works best if you can get up to one of them quickly before the others get close enough to hurt you.

I also use A/S/D a lot (and tend to have the habit of right clicking while I press them) to keep dodging sword attacks, but they will get you sooner or later so it's best to get away and make another approach for the next attack.

Generally being head-on with an armed guy is a bad idea (apart from when you want to do a quick first blow as I explained above), so I always try and stay around the back of them, or at least the sides.

There's a technique that seems to work quite well for me where I'll run towards a guy with a sword and then when I get close just go slightly left of him missing his first slice and getting to the side of him, then if you quickly press 'd' to go right while left clicking you can do a good kick straight into his side without risk of being cut. But as before, if you're fighting a group you'll need to quickly back off or roll away before another one comes from another angle and gets you.

Oh also, in general I seem to be a lot more offensive when they have swords, because they're slower and you can't block a sword slice (only dodge) my moves are usually side stepping to get around them (any angle but dead-on) while left clicking. But if I'm fighting un-armed guys then I usually do about a couple of right clicks to every left click as they're attacks are faster (but blockable) and after a second block it usually seems to be the best time to land a good kick/punch, then I'll run over and kick them when they're down to finish them off.

Those are some tips I feel work for me, but if anyone else who's had the game longer wants to weigh in then they'll probably know more than me. :)

As of right now throws can only be done off an active block (just hold the key after you've got the timing on the block to throw them).

Which sort of answers the second question: blocking and throwing is an excellent tactic against single opponents who go offensive since it floors them and prevents them attacking you for a bit while you wail on them.

Also, if you can see what sort of attack they are doing you can try and counter-attack by attacking with a move that beats their move. This is much harder to do in general since if you don't get it right you won't even have the passive blocking to stop you going down and you need to do it quickly - but if you pick the right attack your opponent won't be able to defend since they'll be in the middle of an attack!

In general, trying to land spin kicks is ideal, but those are the most easily countered. The standing kick is the ideal counter-attack since it's got moderate speed and power and good reach, but if you're not spot on with your timing you may get hit first. The sweeping kick (attack while crouched) is an excellent counter against an opponent approaching you alot of the time since their movement means they are either going to do a high spinning kick or a high punch - and ducking means you'll avoid being hit and if they are close enough you'll knock them to the ground.

As for fighting against weapons, see viral's post ^ :)

Thanks a ton! I'm just going to sit down for a while and get the hang of it. It would be amazing if it could support hosting games on your comp so you could beat on your friends

Since yesterday I've improved a lot. Some other stuff I picked up on is that

1) If you and an opponent are rushing each other, it's a good idea to roll slightly angled to the right of them as you're getting close to them because when you get of that roll you can deliver a kick that often takes them down and/or knocks them out. There's something about that angle that you can exploit, I've used it to my advantage numerous times now.

and also..

2) It's hard to predict when they will attack you if you choose not to attack them. However, you can guarantee that they will probably attack you immediately following your attack. Basically what I'm saying is, you can bait their attack by attacking them, which makes for easy counters because you know it's coming.
