delicious! players with lower end rigs could turn this waaay down, too, although that might interfere with gameplay when enemies are hidden in grass

Looks cool! But doesn't Overgrowth already use a similar grass rendering system?

overgrowth afaict randomly (or accd to other algorithm) renders polys with an alpha mapped plant texture wherever a weightmap on the terrain texture calls for it.

+1, this makes a world of difference.

Not sure how easy it'd be to implement a similar feature, but I've been floored with some of the things they've added. :)

There is but this means that you have to do that in the level file. You have to manually delete some lines of text that makes the grass (there may be other objects used instead of grass, maybe trees or rocks instead or who knows what). Here is a link where i talk about that a little.
