Ooh Yeah, Brother (Wrestling suggestion)

Post by RACERBOY2 » Wed Dec 17, 2014 7:40 pm

OOH YEEAH BROTHER, I want turner to be MACHO MAN and to bring the SMACK DOWN. Those counter tosses aren't enough for the MACHO MAN! I want to grab the rabbits and toss them down and show them their place. It may not be possible just yet, but hopefully in the future until then, SNAP INTO A SLIMJIM! 8)

In my opinion, wrestling doesn't fit Overgrowth that well. Maybe you could create a mod for that though, because it probably won't get into the game

I've wanted to see a grappling combat mod at some point. It'd be tough, but I think it'd be an awesome mod.

Actually I think wrestling would make a fantastic edition to Overgrowth's lore. Shame that I wouldn't have a clue how to implement mechanically...

But it makes sense to me, grappling and tussling and wrestling are more instinctive to people when they get into a fight.

Out of all of my real life experiences fighting with people (bullys, my brothers, etc) It never occurred to me to just straight up punch the fuckers. Naturally we just grabbed each other until one of us was down and the other was on top, or inevitably the fight got broken up. It only makes sense that a person who has no knowledge or experience fighting would attempt to fight in that manor.

But then again being a huge wrestling fan, I say WATCHA GONNA DO BROTHER? WHEN TURNER-MAINA RUNS WILD ON YOU?!

Wrestling and pro-wrestling are lightyears apart.

Actually OP has a pretty awesome idea. Imagine if you could knock out a character for a few seconds (not the lose-round knockout), and if you pick them up before they get up, you could throw them on the wall (or on another character).

Or find a somewhat pointy rock and break their back on it like a f***ing viking!

Or, you could get them on their belly and paint the floors and walls with their blood and brains.

I agree it would be a cool addition, but now we have an incredibly quick brawler, and then we will have to have a way to tangle with opponents for awhile. I find it difficult to find a control scheme that would fit. A player would have to use different buttons to fight in both ways, or would have to use a toggle key. I am just not sure it would work.

I get what you mean there, but when I saw the tackle mod, and how you kind of accidentally grab onto the rabbit your charging, I thought of wrestling, as most un-experienced wrestlers would just grab people and roll around, occasionally trying to slam them on the ground to wind them. I figured the dev's could work with the active ragdolls in any case.

Tackling was a part of the predecessor to Overgrowth (Lugaru) so it isn't a surprise that people could get it to work in the new game, maybe (Right click to choke while un noticed) you could use right click in combat to grab opponent (Down side is that you need a new block key :x ). I don't know really... :? ... 8)

I have made a few posts about tackles before.
Last's Blood Mod allows you to run into characters and activates the active ragdoll for both if you hit with enough relative speed.

Here's what I wrote in an earlier post (also touching on Muay Thai takedowns in that one):

Tackles should, in my opinion, be handled primarily through physics and should be a move for chasing down fleeing opponents or charging someone from a distance. Last's Blood mod has an option to put characters into ragdoll mode when they run into each other with sufficient speed and I think this is going in the right direction. However, it usually results in both characters sustaining similar damage, so there should be a bit more control. I'm thinking about the way tackles seem to be handled in Backbreaker, which seems to be similar to a rugby tackle. The character actively wraps his arms around the opponent and continues driving forward. This results in him falling on the opponent who hits the ground hard and also gets pancaked by the charging character.
By having both characters entering special active ragdoll modes, tackling would still be risky. Charge into a wall and you might hit it head first.

Here's a really long post I made about rugby tackles as a possibility in Overgrowth. In this case the scenario was introducing a tackle as an alternative to the overpowered leg cannon, but I think the general points still stand. Also, there's lots of videos of people getting smashed. :D

If you've seen American Football before, you might have an easier time getting started by watching Rugby League. They have similar rules regarding making territory. The game stops once a tackle is made and the team in possession has a few attempts to score before possession changes.
Of course, Rugby Onion is objectively more fun to watch ( ) because it's continuous play and each team can compete for the ball at all times. A clever tackler can get a guy to the ground, jump to his feet and immediately rip the ball free. That's not really possible in League, but to me this competition for the ball after a tackle is really what distinguishes rugby from gridiron.

Also, consider watching Sevens. Same basic rules as Union, but there are only seven guys per team instead of 15. 15s is a game about team strategy and specialised roles, Sevens is very much a running game. There are generally more scores in Sevens and newcomers often find it a bit more enjoyable to watch. In 15s there sometimes are gruelling battles for territory that can look a bit dull to someone who is still learning what the game is about. Those moments are absolutely intense, though. When you stand in the defensive line and know that you and each guy next to you have to make your tackles as soon as the ball comes out you are like a loaded spring. One of the most exiting situations I have ever experienced in any sport.

Here's an amazing sequence involving some o the best players to currently play the game.

Sorry to everyone not interested in rugby at all.

I'm moderately familiar with rugby and hate the tameness of US football. People act like it's so badass and it really isn't at all.

I love the continuous play and fighting for the ball after a tackle, I think that's freaking great.
