Thoughts on character models shown off in latest Alpha video

Post by Dammasta » Sat Nov 21, 2015 3:46 pm

I think they look a little... Strange... I'm not sure if I like them. Or maybe that's just me being so used to the current ones. What do you guys think?

I feel the same way. I don't hate them, but they just look strange like you said.
Is it one of those "If it isn't broken don't fix it" kind of instances? I know they're making them more recognizable but I'm too attached to the ones we have. I dunno :?

They look extremely reminiscient of the original Lugaru 2 models.

You are correct! Those are very similar. I think prefer the style that Aubrey has developed. it seems more realistic ( as realistic as you can get with upright rabbits). I was going to create a thread about it but you guys beat me to it.

I hope they keep it more influenced by the current models. Maybe if the models were just slightly Lugaru 2-esque but still more Aubrey style, then I'd like it.
I think the art style is just a bit too unrealistic for Overgrowth's world; bright colors, shapely fur and even cartoony style fur just doesn't really sit well.
IMO, the fur on the current textures are perfect. The fur looks very realistic, the eyes are just like a normal rabbit's, and the clothes look pretty good. Of course, we've only seen the Lugaru 2 style rabbits without any clothes, so maybe they'd look better then.

Eh... I don't really like the new ones. If they want more differences that doesn't mean they have to adopt cartoon sensibilities. The characters have more fleshed out differences but I don't think that is worth it if they sacrifice quality and realism. If you check out the art timelapses on the channel you will soon realize that the new art doesn't really compare. :|

The problem is we're seeing these models without actually seeing them in-game, so it's hard to make a comparison. They may look fine. But I just don't care for them as they are right now.

They're obviously early, of course.
And they don't have textures.
Yeah, the way they look right now aren't too good, but I'm sure it'll improve. Nobody said these'll be the new standard (not that I'm saying you thought that).

I might do a 2D mock up of what it'll look like. And hey even if these new ones don't turn out, someone will make a mod for the older models inevitably. I do hope though, that the models do turn out looking better than what we have now. That'd be sick. 8)

Not saying I don't like the new ones but, I'd prefer the current ones over these.

I feel like Aubrey was kind of the soul of this game artistically and I'm only now starting to notice. What about all those art overviews I watched for a long time while he was doing them? It seems like a waste to throw away all that work with totally new character design style.

In fact I'm starting to wonder just now why David didn't just build the campaign and then finish it off on its own. They've had a very long time to complete the story and the game's been easily close enough to "feature complete" to build a full campaign, filling in missing features on the way. I've gone a bit off topic but it feels quite uncanny after watching the game improve gradually over such a long time to suddenly have a full team working on it.

I am interested in their secret (side?) project there... probably a shooter.

Also... This is what turner looks like in the new model. The real one will look better but this is just an idea.
