I think it would be better to have the tools highlighted instantly rather than have it move from one to the other. It's an editing interface; it doesn't need to be flashy.

Why can't they have their cake and eat it too?

As long as it instantly makes the tool active when you click the button, then it's a fully functional toolbar*.

Not in an instant I don't think, but certainly faster. Otherwise it seems a little sluggish.

Agreed.

HCI-wise, as long as you can use the tool instantly, it really doesn't matter.
Looks good.

One thing I might do for extra polish is make it so that when you mouse down on the button, it will invert it until mouse up, for some extra feedback.

Good Idea

That solves all the problems, and looks snazzy.

Nice. =]
I take it this is going to replace what we saw in the live tex/shaders video?
It would indeed help with a little more feedback when clicking.

Only difference between safari and opera is that it doesn't slide in opera. But you don't care. :P

Perhaps instead of moving, have the highlight on the last tool fade out, and fade in on the new one?

Also, in the final, will there be keys assigned to the tools?

Now that I think about it, maybe a fast but still smooth fading highlight would be used for the keys, and the slide for the mouse? The sliding could possibly be 'abused' by the keys, whereas the fading wouldn't be nearly as much fun to mess with :P

Customizable shortcut keys? :0 I use dvorak, so where (for example) w-e-r for move/scale/rotate is good for qwerty, setting it to ,-.-p would be the awesome.

Edit: whoops! Okay. Awesome, thanks.

That's a good idea. I could whip up an interface for that.

Alright, added some more drop shadow, and gave some clicking feedback.
