Alpha 1 FAQ

Post by David » Sun Nov 02, 2008 3:14 pm

Q: I am using a PPC mac with a G4 or G5 and it doesn't run! What's going on?

A: We don't have any PPC macs on site to test on so we didn't catch that problem, but now that you guys are here, we can work on that!

Q: What does the 'P' button do? It kills my framerate!

A: It draws a wireframe version of the terrain, but it is very faint. We will take it out of the next alpha :)

Q: I found a bug! What should I do?

A: Tell us about it, that is the whole point of releasing the alpha! If it crashes, please let us know what the error message is, what was happening when it crashed, and how to reproduce it.

(Note from Jeff - for now VikingZippy has volunteered to organize bug reports, but ultimately John and I are trying to get our roommate on board to do this among other things.)

Can you give us some kind of brief summary of what we should be able to do in the FAQ? Right now there are a few things that are puzzling me, and I don't know whether it's because I don't understand how they work or because they aren't working correctly. It would just help a bit, so that I know I'm not spamming the forums with bug reports that aren't real bugs.

Here's a good FAQ question;

How do you make blood?

Blood is disabled right now; we just want to make sure the core engine is working before focusing on details and special effects :)

In this build you should be able to fly around the terrain, and use the editor to move objects around. The Mac GUI is not working right now, because the GUI uses Chrome for rendering, and that is not out yet. There should be keyboard shortcuts for the editor, but they are not yet documented; I will ask Phillip to post them soon.

Oh, would it be possible to make it a bit more obvious which topics are stickied? It's harder to find the most recent post when they look similar to normal posts.

Do you mean chrome the browser? If you don't mind me asking, if you are using an embedded HTML engine to power your GUI, why not use strait webkit?

from here:
Jeff wrote:Safari and Midori will not work, although the Cairo branch of WebKit would be a good start. The thing about Chrome is that the rendering layer is abstracted with Skia so we can render it to a texture and display it in an OpenGL scene. This is a non trivial task, but thankfully Google has done all the necessary work for us. We are going to have to wait for this core to be ported to Mac OS X and Linux.

Well seeing as its non trivial, would it be faster to edit webkit, or wait for chrome to be released on Linux and Mac?

non-trivial = not easy

It's faster to wait for chrome. They can still work on the rest of the game until chrome for mac is done (we won't need the UI for a long time)

Waiting for Google to port Chrome is free. Porting it ourselves would be a massive undertaking and would delay Overgrowth considerably.

As much as I'd love to get you guys the Mac UI faster, it's not worth it. :(

My code isn't working, maybe I'm typing it in wrong, but how do I enter it?
