Alpha 2 links!

Post by Jeff » Tue Nov 25, 2008 3:12 am

Hey guys, John and I decided that enough is enough and we want to let you guys see Alpha 2! Unfortunately, a lot of the work is in the back end and is not really visibly apparent. That's ok because from now on, we are going to be releasing a new alpha every week on a strict schedule!

The way it's going to work is as follows: When the game reaches a notable milestone according to David, we will release a blessed alpha. This will be a fairly polished and publicized build where you can do some stuff and there are some cool new features.

However, for the weeks where the game is being overhauled or severely messed around (this week, for instance) we will release an Alpha like this where there is not much new stuff too see. John and I basically dove into the SVN repository and took the latest working build and are releasing it to you guys. We think this accomplishes the best of both worlds -- giving the hardcore a new build to play with while notifying the rest of "blessed" builds as they materialize.

With that said, here are the download links!

Windows: http://cdn.wolfire.com/alpha/a2-win.msi
Mac OS X: http://cdn.wolfire.com/alpha/a2-mac.zip

PPC and Linux builds are currently being worked on by Ryan Gordon -- they will be coming soon. Sorry for the delay. :<

Sweet, can't wait to try this. 8)

I noticed I'm not able to install two different builds of OG at the same time - might be good to be able to do this for comparing performance between the builds as they progress?

The editor system works like this:

left click is general
right click is specific

object boxes can be manipulated like this:
drag the corner to scale
drag the edge to rotate
drag the face to translate

it is kind of hard to use right now because there is no graphical feedback built in yet, but that is coming.

also, general rotation is not working yet

you can select objects by double clicking

you can place more cubes by hitting ctrl+c to copy a selected block and ctrl+v to paste it

I can't seem to get *any* rotation to work on the my Mac, not sure if that is what you meant. Other than that everything else works a treat, and performance has gone from 30fps to 60 fps on my crappy X3100 GPU.

Mac users with single button mice should note that they can ctrl+click/drag to simulate a right click/drag.

I have some general graphical problems, the terrain, and any other surface has very weird texture, and the box has transparency. Also, i messed up in the Config file, to make it actually work at start, because the shaders doesn't work for some reason, when i did that, everything was transparent. Not sure what really happaned, looked like shaders "F****d" up, but im not too much into these things ( Althrough i am a young programmer/game developer ).

By the way, can the next releases be in simple packages like Rar,Zip or 7z? It would be much easier to test things out, because othervise you will need to uninstall the old one (And we all know we want to keep these prereleases) , and then install the new version. Or, you could *add* that kind of package download.

Anyhow, great release, looking towards to the next one!

Ryan Gordon is so busy that there's no chance to taste a PPC build before a long time.

One bug: The screen shakes sometimes when you move the box.
