Unofficial alpha 108-1, weekly build

Post by Jeff » Tue Dec 07, 2010 8:20 pm

The unofficial, alpha 108-1 leaked build is here!

A "leaked build" is when John and I grab the latest SVN build and package it up for you guys. It has a ton of known bugs, so don't worry if it doesn't work for you. It is not condoned by David and Aubrey but we want to keep you guys in the loop and give you stuff to play with regularly! Please report bugs in our Trac system! Also, when you find a bug, please ping John as well.

*NOTE* Please remember that these are unofficial alphas and they do not represent a finished product. They are not even polished builds, just straight up raw development dumps not intended for public consumption.

New in this version: (see blog)

To download the alpha, use one of these links (please use the mirrors!)

Win (exe): slow original fast US mirror 1 fast EU mirror 1
MD5 = c4e797777029513a81b6a3f792341e32

Mac: slow original fast US mirror 1 fast EU mirror 1 Hotfile test (from bobo)
MD5 = dc081398e14ec2e13c2a8df5ae3f574c

Please use the speedy mirrors, they are graciously provided by Mow of FoCo Gaming and should provide much faster download speeds. They will also save us a lot of money. :D We now have a set of US mirrors graciously provided by Woet of FFS Network.

Subscribe to the dev blog!

Please remember to uninstall the old version first and let us know how it works!

Note! No PPC, 10.4 Tiger, or Linux support at the moment -- we are waiting on Awesomium for these. AJS says that Linux support is on the horizon, but we cannot make any concrete estimates for it. In the meantime, we are working with the creator of Berkelium to switch to that, which has a Linux build, so we will no longer be dependent on Awesomium.

Note, the windows installer may not work on non-US keyboard configurations -- please let me know if that is the case (I didn't want to upload yet another alpha to fix this at the moment).

CAT TOWN! YAY! Can't wait to try that. Good work, as usual. Now the cat town has to be populated with... FISH! Wait, cats. Yeah, that's right. Fish are aquatic. Silly me!

Your computer specs will help with debugging. Also, make sure you have the most recent version of your graphics driver installed.

The latest alpha needs a .dll file (don't know if it's been fixed yet), which is why it may crash for some. The missing file is icudt42.dll and it can be obtained from fx. the Team Fortress 2 folder, if you are so lucky to own such a game (Day of Defeat, Garry's Mod, Portal folders (and probably others) has the file aswell) .

Located at default setting: Programs (x86) > Steam > steamapps > username > team fortress 2 > bin

Then you copy the icudt42.dll from the TF2 folder and paste it into the Overgrowth folder

Programs (x86) > Wolfire > Overgrowth

Now it should work

Alright, here's what changed for me in this update:
-No more crashing levels, however the levels that did crash have incredibly low framerate (levels that used to crash: Patchy highlands, abandoned grove, dead volcano, and Forgotten plains).
-Windows Explorer crashes whenever i enter a texture folder
-After pressing the "B" button to bow, characters can no longer get up

My Computer Specs:
CPU: AMD Athlon X2 2.33 GHZ,
Graphics: XFX ATI Radeon HD 4650,
RAM: 3 gigs
OS: Windows 7 Professional 32-bit

How come that guard shapeshifted? He was the red guard when he kicked John in the head, and then the brown guard when he landed.

This is the first Alpha I test, and in some levels, when I am in the editor the FPS is REALLY low. About 13 - 10 FPS, altough when i'm using the rabbot the FPS goes about 70 - 100+(sometimes it goes over 200!). Here are the levels that I had this issue:
Dead Volcano
Patchy Highlands
Desert Outpost
Abandoned Grove
Forgotten Plains

Levels like Eroded Plateaur and Red Desert had fine FPS, both in the editor and the rabbot, altough the rabbot FPS was always higher. Also, sometimes when I hit the floor or a wall in ragdoll state, it lags in the moment that he collides, then it goes back to normal.
Here are my specs:

CPU: Intel Pentium D CPU 2.80GHz
Video card: nvidia GeForce 9500 GT
RAM: 2GB
OS: Windows XP professional SP3

Thim

Um, I tried to download it, but it gave me error 403, forbidden zone. Now it directs me to wolfire's page for errors. Kinda new here, not sure what to do.

You will want to always check for the latest alpha (which will always be stickied), you can grab last weeks here... but a new one will be out shortly. Also, if you grab a109, and are on Windows, be sure to notice there is a patch located in the comments.
The error you received is because the "fast US mirror" is no longer working. You should either use the European mirror, or the "slow" original (which in all honesty is usually faster for me anyway...)
