Auto updater test (Mac OS X)

Post by Jeff » Tue Jan 18, 2011 6:59 pm

This thread has been unstickied with Jeff's permission to avoid confusing new people with lots of topics about how to update. Use viewtopic.php?f=13&t=14201 for your updating instead of doing it manually.

----------------

Hey guys, I've made a prototype of the auto-updater which might be useful to people.

Make sure to select your copy of Overgrowth when it first starts. Right now it will only work for 1 alpha version at a time (i.e. if you are more than two versions out of date it won't work).

Worked for me too. The only "drawbacks" I saw were that it didn't update the filename at all (so it was hard to tell if it worked) and the icon did not change (although that doesn't matter since I have the full version anyway.)

The updater worked again for me this week! I don't know if it's intentional or not, but the name and icon did not update, so it was a little more confusing as to which version of Overgrowth was being updated (I had several). However, now that I know, I will just name it Overgrowth, and leave out the alpha number. :)
Jeff, if was an amazingly fast and simple process! Thanks!

does this work if you have an alpha more than one week old?
on another note: do this for windows and stuff and finish this before working on the game. the release of this will probably bump up the amount of preorderers and the amount of feed back on alphas. also you should have a button that allows the user to post a comment on the alpha that they have, to make it easier and to encourage feedback.

Just tried updating from alpha 115 to 116, it seemed to download ok, but now it's hanging on "Extracting update..."

Where does it download the updates to? Would it be too hard to locate these and do a manual update? It'd certainly be more ideal than downloading another whole 1.5 gigs!

I have the same issue as Mango. The updater had worked perfectly for the last two alphas, but when updating to a116, it downloads completely, then keeps "Extracting Update" for hours.

David please make the controls a little more Mac friendly. I, and all my Mighty Mouse/Magic Mouse/trackpad compadres cannot access several features that require separate mouse buttons :(

woops wrong thread

the updated failed somewhere between a120 and a128.
I downloaded again, worked fine from a129 to a130

The update only works one version at a time, so if you miss an update, it won't work. (at least right now...) I've been using it consistently since it first came out have really had no problems (the one time it did fail was a permissions issue on the server.)
