I continue to find the idea of pack animals in a world where all animals are apparently anthropomorphic to be ludicrous. Would they be packing for pay, or have the rabbits enslaved them?

They can't be a mammal. In the world of Lugaru, all mammals have evolved to human-esque forms and civilizations. And yes, there are much more than just wolves and rabbits.

But I agree it would be very odd to have a mount species in the game.. perhaps larger creatures could offer to carry you in multiplayer or something..

How about pre-historic mammals? They're fine right?
Because everyone wants to ride on large bi-pedalanimals! (starwars episode 1 and 5, Final fantasy's chocobos... Umm, I can't think of any others right now, but it seems like a whole lot more, probably because of all the FF games though.)
And horses? Prehisotric knuckle walking horses man, it's the fizzunk.
They're the (well you can see from the picture), Chalicothere and Gastornis.

As much as mounts would be a nice addition, I think the only option that wouldnt be weird is a hawk, but a flying mount isn't the way things should go.

Hey yeah elks deers and stuff that be cool. i was thinking at least a ridable one uhm pack might not be too usful... well actually nevermind it would be cool carry extra swords and dagers and staves.

Oh by the way there is nothing that says that all mammals have evolved why would they ALL. and a lizard would be weird it does not really fit with every thing.
Like I said before flying mounts while cool would not work very well.
Oh and another note NO STUPIDE (sry if i am not aloud to use that word) TRAVEL TO ONE PLACE BY "BUYING A TICKET" AND RIDING ON A BEAST THAT YOU WONT EVEN CONTROL I HATE THOSE.

Yeah, I was thinking that everyone had forgotten that all the animals will be anthropomorphic. I don't think the idea will see fruition in the game. Would there be much need for mounts anyway?
