One of my recent drawings turned out to be some sort of a bear man: Image But I guess they are too similar to wolves to be implemented.

I said vikings not wolfs, i don't think the bird character would work out much because they have no fingers, and foxes look to much and act too much like dogs.

These aren't that big, as far as problems go. You can work around them with minor changes or additions.

For example, so far you only need fingers to hold weapons. There are no buttons or levers or other such things in Overgrowth yet, and flight would be such a huge advantage that being unable to use weapons doesn't seem like that big of a trade-off. Having flying and non-flying characters trying to play the same level will be a much bigger problem, although if the only goal is to defeat all enemies I guess it would work out.
Also, in Kung Fu Panda 1 and 2 they managed to have birds who use their wings both as wings and as hands.

While foxes have many similarities to dogs, if you emphasize their differences, it would be hard to get them mixed up with each other. Real-life foxes don't live in packs. Overgrowth seems to put lots of weight on each dog's connection to its pack. Foxes are often symbols of cunning and are shown as tricksters, dogs are often symbols of loyalty and are shown as guards. Those are pretty major differences there.

And foxes are smarter. Way smarter. But Endoperez has a point. If you look at a fox and say "Hey, that looks a lot like a dog!" then that's all you're going to see or show to your audience. But if you say "Hey, look at all this stuff that foxes do that dogs don't!" your audience will see the differences. Also, I'd like to point out how different Aubrey originally planned dogs and foxes to be:

Although I haven't found anything about culture yet, I'm going to assume that he was shooting for the sneakier, smarter, more able iteration of the rat's style. The dogs are, as Endo said, more loyal and have the feel of guards, and they do have a strong tie to their clans. So it's all a matter of portrayal. I could make the dogs big dumb brutes and the foxes could be evil and sneaky. Those wouldn't be totally untrue projections, but it changes how the audience sees what you made.

Dropbox links don't work inside image tags, it seems. Foxes, a dog.

Weirdness, but the images and links both work for me. Maybe it's cause my computer has them cached... Well, if you find the Twitter post, you could dig through the art until you find the one with four foxes in jackets, and the sketchy one of a dog with a spear that says Fartooth Clan on it. Ta-da!

Janne's fox link worked for me, and after I came back the picture showed up in Korban's post. The dog link 404'd on me though.
