It would probably be simplest (and most realistic) to

a) limit the number of arrows that can be carried by one person;

b) make the arrows hard to come by (e.g. if you were able to craft them, make the arrowheads the most rare component);

c) make the bow change your movement speed and possibly even reaction time to the worse, and

d) an arrow should not immediately kill an enemy unless it hits the chest, the throat or the head.

In exchange, it would be nice if bows&arrows could do a silent takedown if no enemy was looking.

If you crafted arrows (which would be a bit strange), you wouldn't just stumble across arrowheads on the floor or anything. How does that work out?

A bow would be a reasonable idea, I don't see what the problem is. You obviously wouldn't be able to shoot from far away because you'd never be able to hit the intended target from extended distances due to wind resistance and the arrows being fairly light. Taking that on board, you'd have to agree it wouldn't be easy to get one-shot kills with a bow, due to the fact they would be fairly difficult to aim. It would be a nice added bonus, but I don't think it's a must have for the type of game that Lugaru 2 will be.

You would have to buy them, or find a flint rock, or something.

Ah. Enter Turner the rock-smith? Turner has an advanced knowledge of shaping flint into arrowheads and crafting efficient weaponry now, does he?

Sure why not, in a semi-primitive culture it wouldn't really be an exotic proficiency.

Maybe to have moderate skill in it, but not to be able to easily craft bows and arrows for the killing of wolves etc.

Something like:

Not like:

Primitive arrows that do little damage but hinder. Not a giant longbow that takes down an enemy with one shot.

Actually, crafting arrows is not at all strange. My guess is that you don't find a WalMart at every treehouse. Making arrows should be a basic feat if you are into archery, since there's no telling where you can buy new ones if you run out in the woods/wilderness.

Besides, having looked at bowmakers from Japan, and having made bows myself, I can say with some certainty that you don't need to be THE greatest artisan to make one. Certainly, outstanding bows reauire outstanding skill, but learning how to do it yourself is not impossible and maybe even required in a medieval setting, I don't know.

Consider also that Rabbits are of a more fragile build than, say, wolves, ad thus would do good to invest in ranged weapon skills. This is not supposed to mean that I want to see Lugaru 2 turn into Quake 3.5, but ranged attacks wouldn't hurt.

On a sidenote: The aiming of bows as it is in Savage is not how I'd like it.

Rumor has it that modern steel might be found on the Lugaru island.

OR to balance the bows the wolves could do what they do with my throwing knives all the time (even with their backs turned) which is to spin and grab them out of the air leap at me and then stab me in the chest.

COMING SOMETIME BEFORE 2010

Ya, we had sort of discussed this before. A bow shouldn't be that overpowered. In fact, I believe even with a bow equipped, players will not have an actual advantage over others. And With how well the movement system is going... hell, you try hitting someone who's dodge rolling sideways over the ground, sprinting towards you at insane speeds, or even better, you ever heard of bunny hoppers? Let's see you try scoping an actual bunny hopper, no way will people be able to rule with a bow in this game. There will probably be specialists at range weapons like in every game, but I bet every one is going to be a master up close, it's what this game is directed upon.

The bow will probably only be used in "special" occasions. I doubt we'll have to worry about cheap range weapons. Tally has a good point.

Modern steel? Hmmm. Well, I guess the only reason we didn't see forges and such in lugaru 1 was because of limitations in the enigine, not timeline-type things wrongness. Woot.

I don't think the rabbit culture would have spent their time developing a very advanced bow and arrow hunting method. First of all, they're vegetarians and farmers. Secondly, they [except for Turner] run first and fight wolves and other predators as a last option, and when they do they are usually within their burrow-villages, in tight quarters where a bow would be a disadvantage.

I think they would have developed polearms and other implements that evlove from farming tools.

I am still of the opinion, both canonically and gameplay-wise, that bows and arrows are unneeded and superfluous to what Lugaru is about.

That is, of couse, just my opinion.

Ha ha ha Rabbits verses wolves in close quarters.

Anyone read Ender's Game? That would be some freaky battles, like alien vs. predetor stuff (except the aliens wouldn't be as big, and they would be alot smarter too. Oh yeah, just switch them around except, make the predators alot more numerous and alot weaker than aliens. Nevermind, Alien Vs. Predator is a bad example)
