Found some more information on Black Shades...

Apparently, you need SDL to get it to run...which may explain why it's crashing...
EDIT:
I figured out why it isn't working...
Look at the Textures folder...see...there's doubles of each and every texture...you can either take the time to rename and delete the doubles or...download the textures from the link I posted above.

broken in some way (I can open them and they look just the same
as the textures that aren't broken, but the game doesn't take them and
they are much smaller). I don't see any doubles though, but maybe they are
hidden?
I just downloaded the textures linked on IF_THIS_IS_A_README_YOU_HAVE_WON @ icculus.org
(http://filesingularity.timedoctor.org/Textures.tar.bz2)
and replaced and the game works perfect.
