help| physics

Post by daniel12967 » Mon Mar 11, 2013 8:03 am

hey,
How do you make an object behave in physics?
When I create an object is simply frozen.
There are some "hot key" that does this?
(sorry for my bad english)
thanx

You may be wrong. He may already have bought Overgrowth, but he isn't registered as a preorderer yet.
So, when i am right and he has bought OG, but haven't registered, then here is a tutorial about how to get into the secret preorder forum viewtopic.php?f=2&t=16422

Because the Wolfire Forum is for general topics about Wolfire.
The Overgrowth Forum is for general topics about Overgrowth.
Simple.

Also, by registering your account you will get access to the various mods and user-created maps. If you have bought Overgrowth and not registered your account for the SPF you are missing out.
Big time.

Oh, that!
Only objects with physical properties will react to the physics in the game. The only objects in the editor right now that have these properties are characters, usable weapons and working gear. For this demonstration the developers created some custom objects and used some features that are not available to users (yet). The only purpose of it was t show off what the Phoenix Engine is capable of, not to demonstrate the editor.

That video is old and there is no way to do that exactly like it was in the video. What EPR describes is true - you can only do it for specific objects now.

Back when that video was made, the developers were testing physics objects, and I think there were debug commands that enabled physics for selected objects. Those commands have been removed afterwards. You might be able to use scripting (= programming) to do something like that, maybe.

Back in the day, you could press Return and apply physics to any selected objects. As stated before, that is no longer an option. If you really want to play with those physics, you can find old builds in the SPF, and download them and try it. I believe you would need to find something before alpha 80 (maybe even 60).

It looks like that video was released while alpha 32 was out:
http://blog.wolfire.com/2009/06/physics-editor-part-i/
And they included it in build 33:
http://blog.wolfire.com/2009/06/overgrowth-alpha-33/

So, my guess is that it probably was around for about 10 alphas... but I know they removed that code fairly quickly. Also, they started using other physics engines. (I think they are using Bullet now, and were using ODE for a while... I don't know for sure though...)

All the information I gave him is on the blog, and not "hidden" within the SPF... if it's public information, there's nothing we were "suckered" into. (Although, I suppose I could have let him find the blog posts on his own.. :p )

Hmm, yeah maybe. But I kinda felt that he shouldn't have gotten any help with the game because he has so obviously downloaded it illegally :(

I'm not sure that being told something doesn't work counts as being helped with the game… but I understand your concern. I figure it's better to help people be informed, even without offering direct support, in case they want to purchase the game in the future, rather than being chased off.
