in this weekly update video, they showed a 1v1 mode. this 1v1 mode should be the demo.
You should be able to download the vs mode for free. Without any map editor just the vs fight so people can have a demo, to hook more gamers. also, only have that one map and nothing else, so that hackers cannot hack. also with every round stronger weapons and stronger opponents. that would get more people to like the game and buy it. kind of like gladiator mode, except it is a demo.

They plan to release a demo in the future, but, if they were to try and do that now, it would not be representative of the final product. Even though the versus mode is is quite playable, it would still have hardware issues on lower end machines. The kinds of problems that will be fixed with optimization later on in the process. When the game is closer to being complete (i.e. no longer in Alpha stage) we'll see some kinds of demos pop up.

Also, since the editor and the game are very well connected at the moment and the scripts are editable by default, it would take lots of work to make this "hacker-proof".
