Custom levels in Black Shades

Post by Viking Zippy » Sun Jun 10, 2007 6:44 pm

Yesterday I was looking through the readme file of Black Shades for OS X when I found mention of 'custom levels', the configuring of which could be found in the data folder.

So I went into the config.txt file, changed the 0 for custom levels to 1, opened up customlevels.txt, and had some fun, changing it so that 1 out of 1 civilians is an assassin, assassins only have assault rifles, 20 magazines and grenades, 130 for time requirement, and 2 for difficulty.

Much to my dismay, when I started up Black Shades, almost nothing was different; they all had varied weapons, the starting gun was varied, and though there did seem to be more assassins, it certainly didn't look as though 1 out of 1 civilians was out to kill the VIP.

Any ideas?

I get the feeling it might use different calculations, such as adding more assassins instead of turning civilians into assassins.

Other than that: Hm, strange.

We've been over this like two times before and pretty much came to no
conclusion at all. I can't get it to work either.

Wait, did you say the starting gun wasn't meant to be varied and stuff?

Well that's just crap. Am I the only person in the world who's got custom levels to work?

Just a bunch of levels to add to the miserable amount of assasin levels before you get to the first zombie level (Zombie levels are just too damned hard)

Oh and more grenades.

Well, this is what my Black Shades folder looks like, and this is what my Black Shades Data folder looks like.

Try making a plain text document called customlevels.txt putting it in your data folder.

Then copy & paste this into it:

Code: Select all

Number of missions:
2
Level type: (assassin=0, zombie=1)
0
Environment: (sunny=0, foggy=1, snowy=2, rainy=3, red=4, night=5)
3
How many different guns can assassins have:
2
List them: (0=unarmed, 1=sniper rifle, 2=assaultrifle, 3=magnum, 4=handgun, 5=grenade, 6=knife, 7=shotgun
1
3
One out of how many civilians is an assassin:
4
Starting gun: (see above)
4
How many magazines/grenades:
5
Time requirement:
30
Difficulty:(0 to 2, 1=normal)
.5

Level type: (assassin=0, zombie=1)
0
Environment: (sunny=0, foggy=1, snowy=2, rainy=3, red=4, night=5)
0
How many different guns can assassins have:
1
List them: (0=unarmed, 1=sniper rifle, 2=assaultrifle, 3=magnum, 4=handgun, 5=grenade, 6=knife, 7=shotgun
5
One out of how many civilians is an assassin:
4
Starting gun: (see above)
6
How many magazines/grenades:
0
Time requirement:
25
Difficulty:(0 to 2, 1=normal)
.5
That's the template/default file for custom levels.

I have the same problem : when I change the Custom Levels option, nothing changes.

BunnyWithStick, what is your configuration? Have you an Intel-based Mac or a PPC-based?
And, maybe you haven't the same version of the game as us (but, I don't thjink so). Could you send us an zip archive with yours?

Are you using the OS9 version or the OSX version?

I've got a MacBook; so, I'm on Intel and I can't use OS9 apps.

Well I'm not sure how you can run Black Shades at all if you can only run the OSX version. The OSX version just crashes for me. :(

To everyone who can run OS9 apps, try the OS9 version of Black Shades. I'm pretty sure it should help you run custom levels.

The OSX version runs perfectly on my MacBook!
I had the opportunity of playing Black Shades on an PowerPC-based Mac, and the OS9 version of Black Shades supports custom levels... so, it's likely a bug of the OSX version.

Well, problem solved then. Use classic, or if possible boot into OS9, if you're using an intel mac, bad luck. :(
