Giving pre-orders access to beta builds seems like a much better incentive to me.
Well something could be done along the lines of how Bungie went about releasing the map packs for Halo 3, such as the Heroic map pack etc. Initially you had to pay Microsoft points for them, but after a while they just released the download as free to download by everyone.

This way you could provide exclusive content to people and release it for download by the general public at a later date. This means people won't be "afraid they might miss something", although that's a silly concept because I'd never preorder a game just because I might miss something free that's being given.

I think access to a beta sounds good.
I think access to exclusive content sounds good.

There's many viable possibilities.

How about something like the Fable two hobbe figurine?

A squirrel warrior figure or something?

You could also give out a limited soundtrack CD or themed items. For example Bungie had some "Surly Dwarf Ale" created for their Myth series. I think they gave it out at their promotion booths and tournaments.

I love the idea of a multiplayer beta. Like someoe said before, it could help solve possible issues before release. Although, any beta that would be given with preorders would likely be leaked to the public, unfortunately. Also, I don't think a shirt would be too wise considering the cost of production. If they can't afford making it cheaper for preorderers, what makes you think they can package shirts for them. Let alone free shirts.

Perhaps a preorder could grant the orderer a special title on the forums. Something along the lines of "Overgrowth Supporter". It's a crude idea, I know, but it leaves no room for leaks, and is completely free for the team.

I am going to preorder it no matter the incentive, or lack thereof.

Considering I rarely populate this forum, and have no use for a custom title, I agree.

Providing such an incentive would cause me to repudiate the "secret" status of said forum.

Or maybe just get the editor in advance, like with Spore.
