!!!Black Shades Extras + Premade Levels!!!

Post by Ragdollmaster » Wed Dec 30, 2009 7:16 pm

The secrets of this old technical FPS are many, but few know them. After some experimentation I was able to figure out how to do more or less anything in the game and have decided to share it here because I couldn't find a good guide anywhere else on the forums :)

Step 1: Go to the folder Black Shades is installed in (typically, this file is C:\Program Files\Black Shades for Windows users)
Step 2: Open the config text file
Step 3: Set the "Custom Levels" to "1" and set the "Show FPS and other info" to "1".

Result: Now you have some more of the game available to you- debug mode is enabled.

DEBUG CONTROLS
F - Force Push
Tab - Switches to Third-Person Mode
K - Skips to the next level
Shift+X - Changes weapons
G - Hold it down while firing and your bullets are turned into grenades

Now, you're probably wondering, "What about dem custom levels?" I've asked around and many people have said it can't be done on anything but OS 9. But... I'VE DONE IT. THEY ALL CALLED ME CRAZY, AND I DID IT. BWAHAHAHAHAHA.

First off, copy this and paste it into Notepad, and save it as "customlevels".

Number of missions:
1
Level type: (assassin=0, zombie=1)
0
Environment: (sunny=0, foggy=1, snowy=2, rainy=3, red=4, night=5)
0
How many different guns can assassins have:
2
List them: (0=unarmed, 1=sniper rifle, 2=assaultrifle, 3=magnum, 4=handgun, 5=grenade, 6=knife, 7=shotgun)
1
4
One out of how many civilians is an assassin:
4
Starting gun: (see above)
2
How many magazines/grenades:
4
Time requirement:
30
Difficulty:(0 to 2, 1=normal)
.8

Once you have the customlevels text file done, put it into the "Data" folder in your Black Shades install folder. You are now playing with customlevels instead of the hardcoded ones, nice! Edit the above file to your liking (or look at the bottom of this post where I have some premade ones)

Now, decoding the customlevels format... it's pretty straightforward and self-explanatory but there are some parts I want to clarify just to make sure there are no misunderstandings that would lead to "OMG BLACKSHADES DELETE MY SYSTEM32 WTF"

Number of missions - How many levels you have in the game. (Note; after all of your levels are over, the game ends and shows your score. The game's usual levels will NOT play with customlevels set up.)
Level type - What kind of level you'll be playing, 0 being civilians and assassins, 1 being all hostile zombies.
Environment - An obvious value; just follow the key.
How many different guns can assassins have - Controls the weapons used by assassins.
List them - First, make sure that the amount of guns you list is equal to the value you entered as "How many different guns can assassins have" or the game may not work properly. Make each numerical value its own line, like:

0
2
3
7

etc.

One out of how many civilians is an assassin - The ratio of civilians to hostiles; "1" means 1:1 (all assassins), 10 means 1:10 (1 in 10 assassins), etc. Don't put it at 0 or the game crashes. If you want a playground with no assassins, just set the value very high (like 99999)
Starting gun - The weapon you start with. One value only. Follows the same key as "assassin guns."
Time requirement - Number of seconds a mission lasts. Once again, 0 is not a proper value; while it won't crash the game, it will skip the level.
Difficulty level - Affects AI response time; lower values make them take a longer time to aim, while higher values turn them into true hitmen where it takes only a few seconds for them to get a clean shot off.

NOTE: On the zombie levels, you don't have to edit the values of "How many different guns can assassins have" and "One out of how many civilians is an assassin", or list the guns of the assassins. On the zombie levels, difficulty only affects the zombies' speed and their durability (you may have to shoot them a couple of extra times, and their heads may be more resilient than usual)

NOTE2: If you wish to have multiple levels, make sure that the "Number of missions" only appears at the very top of your customlevel.txt file. Also, a mission code spans between "Level type" and "Difficulty"; have a blank line between each mission code. For instance:

Code: Select all

Time requirement:
300
Difficulty:(0 to 2, 1=normal)
1

Level type: (assassin=0, zombie=1)
1
Environment: (sunny=0, foggy=1, snowy=2, rainy=3, red=4, night=5)
4
since "Difficulty" is the end of one mission code and "Level type" the beginning of another, there should be a space between the two. This should allow you to have multiple-level games with ease!

~Big Guns~
Higher calibers equal higher stakes; all of the baddies are armed with hard-hitting, heavy-shooting weapons, and so are you. You won't be able to take as many bullets for your friend in white as usual, but you'll be using a handgun that can supposedly kill an elephant in one shot, so who cares?

~Rata-tat-tat~
Have fun playing with automatics that can turn the good guys and the bad guys alike into Swiss cheese! Faster guns mean more shots, and assassins love shooting, so you'll have to mow them down before they can do any harm. Be a conservative sharpshooter, or a wild ruffian that sprays-and-prays: the Assault Rifle lets you play any way you want!

~The Joys of Alzheimer's~
Let's face it- you're not as young as you used to be. You can still do your job the way you could ten years ago... or at least, you would be able to if you had remembered to bring your weapon. Uh-oh. Scramble to disarm an assassin and grab their gun before your VIP goes up in smoke!

Level type: (assassin=0, zombie=1)

Maybe, instead of a sticky an entry in the wiki would be an option. I know, the wiki is not really prominently displayed and linked to, but it is kind of a vicious circle, as long as there is no content in the wiki, it won't be referenced and as long as it won't be referenced, nobody will put content in.

Also, in the wiki you could structure that post a lot better by using new articles for the different custom levels.

I feel it kind of egotistical to put my own custom levels into the Wiki... as I just showed it's really easy to make them, so it's not like they're anything special.

And you're right about the Wiki not being prominent- I didn't even know Wolfire HAD a Wiki page!

Well I wouldn't mind as long as they are in their own articles or maybe as a batch in one article linked from the explanation. It is not like it being offensive if it is well structured and there shouldn't really be a space problem;).

On a related note, didn't you think about it being egotistical to demand a sticky? ;)

why would it be egotistical? this question's been asked a billion times and I always give a "it doesn't work answer" and everyone else gets angry about the person asking or whatever. this kind of needs a sticky imeo.

Still can't get custom levels to work on OSX.
Ragdollmaster wrote:DEBUG CONTROLS: Hitting "F" executes a Force Push, Tab switches to Third-Person Mode, K skips to the next level, and Shift+X changes weapons (just like in Lugaru)
You forgot, most importantly, holding down "G" when firing. I'll let anyone who hasn't experienced it try it for themselves, but I'll just say that it works best with the assault rifle or the shotgun. And make sure you're not too close to your target.

I've only tested this on XP and 7, so no surprise there... iirc this worked fine on OS9, is there anyway you could emulate that on OSX? And also try searching for older topics on this because OS9 is what worked for most people.

And. Still. No. Sticky.
