Wolfire, Humble, and Steam

Post by MetalLight » Wed May 12, 2010 3:57 pm

Hey everyone, I'm not sure how often moderators or developers or other people who have the power to change things read these forums, but I thought I'd post and see if anyone agreed with me on this.

I recently purchased the humble indie bundle, which as probably everyone knows, includes Lugaru HD, Aquaria, Gish, Penumbra: Overture, World of Goo, and the donated Samorost 2. First I want to say thank you, Wolfire, and all of the other included developers, for doing this.

However, I also enjoy using steam, for achievements and the interface, mainly. Now given that today was the release of the Mac Steam client, this thought was driven home to me further - is there a possibility of getting the purchases for the Humble Indie Bundle transfered over to Steam, in the same way that I would be able to activate the Orange Box on Steam? Especially since every game in the Humble Indie Bundle is on steam, with the exception of Lugaru.

Before anyone chimes in and reminds me of the 'add non-steam game...' function, I did want to remind you that this does not activate the achievements in steam, it only allows for the steam interface to be present, to the best of my knowledge. If the activation were impossible, it would be suitable, but I would certainly prefer the activation, or something to that effect.

Also, don't get me wrong - I dont mean this as a complaint, merely as an idea and a hope.

Steam is a DRM in itself. The whole theme of the Humble Bundle was that DRMs suck. Should I say more?

Perhaps, but I'm not asking that Wolfire and other developers use Steam to execute the HIB, only allow activation on Steam, were it possible. Thus allowing a version with no DRM, in addition to giving players the option to utilize achievements, community, and the like.

I don't think it's possible. The copy would have to be Steam activated, thus effectively creating a DRM surrounding it. You could email Valve and ask, though.

Just make a textfile with the achievement requirements and track your progress by yourself. HA!

You can just add a shortcut to the game in Steam.
Technically, you would be playing it "through Steam", but you would lack the itty bitty awesome of Achievements.

EDIT: I didn't read the entire OP, sorry about that.

Well, they're trying to capitalize on the success of the Humble Bundle, it seems. However, since it's Steam, it probably won't work out as well.

EDIT: I've got $5 on that bundle being created without the authors' permissions, as well.

Oh, I see.

[dissapointment]
And they have to charge me in Euros too!
I hate how they do that, changing currency depending on where I'm connected from.

They don't even change the amount in Euros compared to the amount in Dollars, even though their value compared to our currency is very much different from eachother.

1 US Dollar = 7.60959722 SEK (Swedish currency)
1 Euro = 9.66342751 SEK
9.66342751 / 7.60959722 = 1.2699

... meaning that buying a game from Steam with Euros would cost me 1.27 times as much as it would if I were to buy it with dollars. Damnit, Valve!
[/dissapointment]
